Ideas for Storing Literature

Hi Guys,
I am looking for ideas on the best ways to store vintage literature, I have collected quite a vast amount over the last 30 years.
I currently have it all in box folders, lever arch folders etc but am wondering if this the best way ?
The collection has cost £££’ s over the years
Here is just a weeny bit of the stash lol

Hi Keith,

I am running into the same problem — one part of me thinks we should save this stuff digitally as back up. I’m only saying that because I lost my materials in a wildfire a few years ago and wish now that I at least took photos or something of them and stored them in the cloud.

By the way, that’s quite a nice assortment of literature you have there! Thanks for sharing.

Hey Todd,
OMG the thought i trying to scan all the literature makes my blood run cold, it would take me months lol but it would be great as sharing would be so much easier as well as preservation factor / back up.

I have mine in a 3 ring binder inside of page protectors, it works well and its all at hand when needed. You can design a binder cover for the description of whats inside.

Check around museum archival supply places

There are all sorts of binders, boxes and so forth designed for long term storage of things on paper. Most are made from various strengths of "acid free" paper thus things inside won't go brown or whatever, long as the container is placed in proper area.

A small box used for storing blankets, christening gowns and other textiles might work for your lot as well.

Once also considered digitalizing much or all of our collection of vintage appliance manuals/information. Once found out about work involved it was "scrub that". *LOL* There is a reason services that do such things charge very dear for their time.

Digitizing Documents

I also have a lot of documents I either want or have been advised (by accountants, lawyers, etc.) not to throw out. I did some preliminary research into the types of OCR scanners available for this. They seem to fall into two types:
- One automatically adjusts to the size of a given document so there's no need to sort but each sheet of paper must be hand fed ONE AT A TIME.

- The other lets you stack a ream's worth of sheets at a time so you need not stand there, but the sheets must be all the same size.

IIRC, both types scan both sides of the sheet at the same time.

What I want, of course is a scanner that does both, lol.

I've not looked into the cost of hiring a service to do it.... Although I must admit I'd get immense satisfaction from the thought of watching guys haul away boxes of paperwork and then being handed a flash drive a week or so later.....
