1996 Dependable care

Geoff,
Yes, mom is still using her 1996 set, which to my knowledge have never had any repairs. I do know that the washer is exhibiting the same spin/balance issues as the A608 and the A702 before it, namely too many washings of too few clothes and too much water, so mom has to watch it carefully when it starts to spin(so she says) I think she just likes to fuss with it.
We'll see how long this set lasts!

Jeff ... here's what's funny. In one of the service manuals I have, Maytag actually told the dealer to let the homemaker know that "full" water levels are better than not full!

They also made it a point to tell them when in doubt, always run on a "full" cycle.

Maybe that's where your Mom got that; from a dealer.

Washing habits can be hard to break! :-)

water levels

Geoff, the only thing I can think of is mom was used to using a wringer, which she probably filled full and washed multiple loads of clothes in.
As you say some habits are very hard to break, and my mom is definately one creature of habit!

Jeff ... yes; probably from your mom's years of wringer washer use.

The wringer washer instructions actually tell Mrs. Homemaker to fill her Maytag wringer washer to the water line, no matter how much clothing is to be washed.

and to finish up the month.....for $25....

A matched pair Maytag Washer and Dryer (electric). About 20 years old, but in decent shape. Both worked last time I tried them around Christmas. Very low price, but must pick up. Located in Troy off of Route 2.

Geoff, Congratulations of this treasure. You will be amazed at the wash action you will see when you use the Poly Power Fin agitator in this machine. That wide "blind" area of the tub between the last row of holes on the side and the single ring of holes in the bottom of the tub really catches and magnifies the water currents generated by the fins.

This is the model that had tinted sleeves for the fluorescent tube in the control panel so that if, for example, you had a pink washer, the control panel light would be pink also. You can see the sleeve colors in old parts lists.

Maytag's high spin speed was 618 rpm from the start and did not change.
