1976???

@ kenmorekeith:

In 1976, when I was growing up, we were washing with the 1967 24" One-Knob, One-Speed, One Water-Level and One-Cycle BOL Kenmore that is featured in today's "Picture Of The Day" which was paired up with a 1975 Kenmore "All-American" Dryer.

Now, if I was grown and had my own pad back then, then I would've either had a:

(01). A Keyboard Lady Kenmore (1966-73)(One of the Three-Speed Models)

(02). A Frigidaire 1-18

or a

(03). A TOL Speed Queen w/Stainless Steel Tub

I don't think I would've went wrong with neither of these three, would I???

Oh...... bring back the good ol' days....

1976 would have been the second semester of my junior year or the first semester of my senior year in high school. We still had our 1960 Kenmore Model 80, with the cool pushbutton cycle selector and rapid-advance timer. It had been repaired so many times it was almost a new machine. In 1980, my stepfather replaced all the innards using a machine he'd found at the local dump. I finally replaced it with a new angel-winged Whirlpool in 1985.

I started the year with my Frigidaire WIN and the Maytag DE806. Then at the end of January everything went into storage and I moved to the DC area and for two years had to use the machines in the basement of the apartment building. At first there were Speed Queens with loud crashing solenoids, heavy equipment sounds and long overflow rinses then the equipment was changed out to Whirlpool machines.

Ah, yes, 1976....

The summer olympics were in Montreal that year, so there was a steady stream of relatives from the UK and several 'wannabees' from the US...
That kept the '73 Viking busy! This was a GE filter-flo machine (with the mini-basket, bien sur!). I always thought it did a great job!! That poor old Viking got sent to Valhalla in 1988...

In 76

The last of the westy front loaders.... not sure of the model number.... but it had all the bells and whistles... This 350 pound beast lived in the laundry room of my families home from 1964 to 1978

In 1976 I was using a 1968 Jordan Marsh Ambassador. It was really a Westinghouse Top Loader. Power Plus 16. Even the knobs looked much like the westinghouse. One difference was that the filter was like the GE Filter Flow attached to the agitator. Nice machine. Worked hard. Always gave a clean wash.
Used Everyday.Lasted Until 78. Replaced with a single speed 24" kenmore.

Hard to say what I'd have been washing with if at that time I had my own place and could afford new appliances.

My lust for a Maytag was fully developed then, but I also was in love with my '50 Westy FL even though it was a basket case.

In real life, Mom's washer was a new Kenmore, the oddball series with gold & rust motif on the dial and fake wood paneling on the rest of the console, with "Quiet Pak" and gold Penta-Swirl agitator. Best machine Mom ever owned, and I talked her into it.

A TOL--our family's first!, we were doing well-- Westinghouse Toploader, with two agitators, weigh-to-save lid, and the first machine in my experience, that used a strong flush rinse right at the start of the wash spin. All the hot steamy fragrant suds arcing around and out, fresh cool water flooding in, the wild spin--very powerful. I loved that! The tub indexed, it made nice sounds, and was a really fun and interesting washer.
