I had a growth on my left shoulder blade. It showed up about a year ago.I went to my family doctor and she said to watch it and let her know if it got any larger. It did. But not until about a month and a half ago when I slipped and fell in my tub.Two weeks ago,it started to get painfull and larger.Last week,it came to a head but would not drain. It grew to about 6 inches across and 3 inches high.My skin had become inflamed and I was running a 101c fever.I went to the ER friday night and was admitted to the hospital. The did local surgery doing local anisthesia and removed most of the infection leaving it open to drain.Meanwhile,my blood tests came back and the doctors were very alarmed. My glucose count was 470!!!!!The limit is around 120.They put me on insolin, severe antibiodics, blood presure medicine, and a diabetic diet.I have been getting severe anxiety attacks and can not work until they sease.the drugs prescribed to me ran a total of $742.56!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I went to WalMart( I hate their stores for personal reasons)and got four of the 9 meds lowerd to $389.17!That's still very high but a lot better than it was originaly.

chuck, sorry to hear all of this. Yikes!! Please keep us posted. I hope your anxiety attacks will subside too. Did you go to an ER in Houston?

Chuck,

I'm sorry that you had to go through this. I hope and pray that you have a speedy and complete recovery. Feel better!

Mike

476 is definitely diabetes, but with meds and diet something you can live with. It may have also lowered your immune response leading to the infection. I think you'll be feeling much better with the blood sugar under control, and it's good that it was discovered. I am wondering why your regular doctor didn't catch it earlier.

Hi Chuck

I have health problems aswell and i am also suffering with severe panic attacks and i totally understand how you are feeling at the moment, sometimes it feels as though you are the only one going through what you are feeling but you are not alone. 1 in 4 people suffer with anxiety attacks and its very common. try and remeber when you are having them that they cannot harm you and all it is is extra adrenalin in the body and if you can just sit there when you are having them and try a few little things like clenchingyour hands slowly then letting go and carry on doing this for a few minutes then they will subside, there is a reall good book that helped me when i first had them and its cale " SELF HELP FOR YOUR NERVES" and its by claire weekes...

it is a brilliant book and it helps you understand why people have them and how to live with them. the book has been re published al over the world. google the name and the writer and you will have some results.

please remeber you are never alone and people care about you.

agape love amoung friends

I want to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts and concerns!I am so glad that this group of fabulous people is here.I know not all of us agree with each other on certain topics but all in all, this website rocks! The reason of concern the dr.s had stemmed from the infection posibly spreading. The area it was in was so inflamed and swolen, they couldn't tell if it was localised all in one lump or in different lumps. The er nurse followed the dr's advice and drew circles around the areas that seamed higher than the others. As they opened and drained out the infection, they saw that it was localised and cut a horizontal opening to help it drain evenly. They were also able to scrape the sides of any debre that may have formed from the infection.I was on IV and they were able to inject the anti biodics as well as a pain killer(morphine) into my bloodstream.I hated the feeling it gave me so I asked them to use either something else or nothing at all.The surgery took away the pain I was having and even though the cut they did was big,it didn't hurt as bad as the infection did before the cut. They changed it over to a non barbiturit medication and that seamed to work better. The morphine was also causing a major itch as it entered my body.To me that's a sign of rejection.Any way.I do feel a bit better this morning and may go to work for a while.I just have to follow my diet and take my glucose count regularly. One thing the nutritionist did say that maybe everybody here needs to know is that diabetes does not ever go away.Once you have it,it's there to stay. Now it can be brought under control where you may be able to go off all meds but it stays in your system. The best thing to do is watch what and when you eat, exersize, drink lots of water, get plenty of rest and keep your weight down to your own correct level.i am hoping that I will be able to lose the right amount of weight. It will be a chalange but i am going to a support group each week to help me reach that goal.Again,I thank all of you for your friendship!God bless all of you and may your peace and joy be overflowing!Chuck

Oh, My!

Oh, Chuck!

I hope the infecton clears up soon, and that the panic attacks are managable.

I have a Certified Diabetes Educator, whom I see twice a year, and he is very helpful. I also usually see my Registered Dietician at the same visit (they share an office). Even though I have been diabetic since the early 90s, I find it useful to check in with Ed (CDE) and Patti(RD) every so often.

Best of luck, friend!

Cause?

Any idea what caused the original spot? A dear friend of mine had a similar event last year. Please take the diet regiment serious and do what it takes to get yourself in shape healthwise. Where would we be without your insight and contribution to AW? Hang in there, be well and stay in touch.

I had a serious acne problem as an adolescent. My face was o.k. but my back and shoulders were always braking out.My mom would clean up the area and I used Physohex which at that time was not prescription only.Because there was hexochlorophine in it which the F.D.A claimed was carsonagenic, they took all of it off the market and it is still available but only by prescription. It all pretty much cleared up around my 20's and 30's.If something flaired up,I'd go to my dermatologist to have it looked at and cared for. That was when I worked at Johns Hopkins hospital and had axcess to different specialists who were on my insurance plans. Now I have no insurance so I have to pay premium.Anyway, this "pimple" began forming on my left shoulder blade around a year ago.My family dr.looked at it and told me if it got any worse let her know.I had a serious fall in my new tub and hit that area as well as my rib cage.It wasn't long after that fall that the area began growing and I could feel the presure. It finaly came to a head but the infection was so old the fluid had thickened and wouldn't drain w/out surgery.Quite an ordeal.I hate being out of it and need to get healthy again.By the way guys, the anxiety attacs seam to have subsided!! Thanks again for all your care and support!! Chuck

Getting on

It sounds like this hit you pretty hard. I know it also affects other areas of your life (work, the home, just getting things done). Life throws surprises at us. Sometimes bad ones. I lost part of a lung a few years ago to sarcoidal lung disease. Six week recovery after the surgery. Life changed. Six meds twice a day to keep my lungs going and severe asthma to top it off.

Follow your medical treatments carefully and by all means follow the diet stuff. That will help head off problems down the road.

I didn't give in. I was 39 when it happened. Today I am 44 and restoring an old house, taking proper precautions for my breathing of course.

Hang in there and remember something: It comes to pass, not to stay.

I like what I do but without income tax or any other deductions including health insurance,I am very uncomfortable financialy.I need to get back into the retail or clerical hospital work field.I have plenty of experience in both.My only fear would be the slump in our economy as far as the retail goes.As far as hospitals go,people always get sick. That will probably be my next move.I am not too weak seeing blood and guts.I worked the ER at Johns Hopkins and saw it all. From car crashes and tree falls to overdoses and murders,I was so calleced it had no effect on my feelings.Don't get me wrong.I am a very compassionate person but I could never get involved with a patient. Now there were a few times I did cross over the line.Fred Gwynn was a cancer patient(he was Herman Munster)who needed a longer bed.We had extras that were being tossed so me and my other half(Ron)who worked in carpentry, built one especialy for him and gave it to him as a gift.He and his wife requested my presence each night for dinner!Even though he was very ill(pancreatic cancer)he made me laugh and appreciated my going that extra step to accomadate him.Even though it was fround at for my involvement with a patient,I won an award for outstanding patient care. When he died,I went to his funeral to comfort his wife and children.Fred and his wife owned a farm in Darlington,Md.I went there for the wake and was astonished at how beautiful and peaceful their home was.By the way, they had a beautiful Maytag washer and dryer in white.A806 and DE606,KitchenAid dishwasher 1979 Superba, an older Subzero refrigerator, and a clasic Chambers gas range in white. They also had a Caloric gas incinerator!lots of horses and plenty of land to ride them on.
