A friend called me the other day and asked me if I was still collecting old automatics and if so, would I like a few more. Well, what do you think I said to him? He said he guessed these were quite old and that he was sure I would like them.

Imagine my surprise when his truck pulled up and I spotted the Kenmore bolt down! Lordy me, I now have a parts donor for the identical bolt down I drove up to Seattle and I got from Kelly back in 2006!!!!!!! I've almost had it running over the last couple of years but not totally. Now I've got something to work with and get that little bolty bolted down and running. I'm excited.

Now the other machine.....

....has me totally stumped! It's an ABCOMATIC but it's a wringer model with traces of a semi automatic.

It's got a wringer but the clothes seem to disapper for about 15 inches and then come thru another wringer on the back end of the machine.

Now here's what everybody calls "the money shot". I'd sure like to find out someday why it's called that. I do like that agitator.

..and the right side I'm still wondering where and what happens to the clothes once they go thru the first wringer. The machines has got me baffled.

Interesting.

If those are hoses on the side and water temps, you may have a "Rinser" on your hands. The clothes are rinsed in the 15 inch space after the first set of rolls and then wrung again.

 

EDIT: Wrote and posted before your last pic. Indeed a Rinser. Amazing.
 
Wow Dick, looks like this is what you found, I'm not sure but I don't remember anyone else posting that they had one of these very rare machines!

the bolt down looks like it could be made into a resonably decent machine although the lid is bent. Don't ask me why the lid is bent! And the dials are missing (proably broke off) on the control knobs.

I don't know if I'll put the ABC on my list of priorities at this point but I'm sure curious about it.
AND within the next couple of days I'll post about another auto that has been recently brought back to life.

Thanks for the quick reply and information. That's kind of neat. Now I wished I could find out how that "rinser" works. Hmmmmmm......
 
OHH EMM GEE! A ROUND TUB KENMORE! I've only ever seen one in my whole dam life. At a neighbor's circa 1950 when I cruised the neighborhood for housewives doing laundry in the garage where most washers were. About half the time I got cookies too. How different a world was it back then?

COOL KM BOLT DOWN AUTOMATIC WASHER

Hi Dick your new KM BD is about the oldest model of these interesting washers, it was a standard feature of these washers to include the Suds-Saver. I have the same machine awaiting restoration that I have had for many years. One interesting feature of these earliest bolt downs was that they used an electric pump with a universal brush type motor for the suds return pump instead of the separate belt driven pump that appeared by 1950 on all other WP built AWs from that point onward till 1954. From 1954 to the end of BD washer production WP always used one pump on its washers to but discharge the waste water and return the suds water for reuse.

 

I am curious Dick if your washer still has this electric suds return pump. It looks like your new machine sat out in the sun for many years which destroyed the few plastic parts that this machine used, hopefully between the two machines you now have you can complete one. This may inspire me to get mine done, I already sent the dials from mine to my great friend John who is restoring them. Before you get rid of what you will not use Dick we should talk as we may be able to help each other with parts.

I was looking for one of those ABC'S!! Its a Rinsing Wringer!! They're rare because they weren't made long, the autos came out soon after these or at the same time, look at the name on the front it says "automatic"!!

It was the last wringer ABC built and has the centric action agitator, just like the automatics.
It was designed to wash , wring, then a set of perforated rollers had holes to let water flow through the clothing to rinse them and then a second set of wringers behind that to dry them.

A real time saver!!

I had a beed on one a few years back but it was locked in a Chicago basement and the guy wasn't easy to deal with so I let it go.

They both will look good in your collection.
The bolt downs look vintage but seems the top rim is modern to me.
The very first agitator That captured my attention in my grandmothers 1950 something automatic.
The thumbnail cap straght vane, your agi seems cracked do you have
a rplacement...?

mickeyd-Sorry I overlooked your post in my haste while uploading the pictures but in answer to your question-YES those are water hoses on the side of the wringer which was one point that really stumped me. I thought immediately of my Easy Spindrier which has a similiar water hookup with the temp of the water controlled by the water faucets while these on the ABC are controlled I assume by an actual water valve attached to the machine.

Arbilab-You're telling me it was a different world back then! The 50s were fabulous years and made such an impression on me that I have been trying to keep some parts of them alive thruout my life including the mid century house I have down to the 55 Bel Air Chevrolet.

My Godparents had a round tub Kenmore and my Godmother must have thought it was to be handled and operated as a fragile toy because she always sorted out the wash into very small loads which kept that Kenmore humming all day long at various times, WHICH gave me a chance to watch it all day long!

combo52- You brought up an interesting point and that just might be what the guy was ramblin' on about. He was saying something about the suds being returned which I was already fully aware of, it was hot and I just wanted to unload them and put them in the garage so I was kind of shuttin' out his babble. Wow! I'll have to take a look one of these days. That would be a real hoot having an electric pump sending the water back. Will let you know John.

jetocne-thanks for informing me about the perforated rollers and the rinse operation. Now a little about it makes sense. I need to learn more. Little by little I guess.

Brad-Yes it is a "different" little machine and my first thoughts were about leaving it sit however I have been getting emails that are spurring me on to dive in and get it running. I'm kind of getting a bit inspired so might me changing my mind here right soon.

I sure did miss seeing you at Kevin's washin and catching up.

aldspinboy-How observant you are-Yes the agi is cracked but I have another round tub Kenmore with a good agi waiting in the side wings.

Hey Dick I wanted to ask in CA at Kevin's but forgot when Mixfinder whipped up all those birthday cakes for us--- how did you make out with your SpinDrier? It was a nice looking machine.

We needed more than a weekend to get to talk to everybody! Kevin what were you thinking?? Next time its a washer-week!!
