There is a guy named Sal, in Lansdale Pennsylvania, who is selling the pictured GE Monitor Top refrigerator below as well as other items. He said the GE fridge was in its crate when he found it in an abandoned property he acquired at an auction years ago. When I look at the photos he provided, it looks to me like it may have been used for a while as there is some kind of round ring stain on the inside floor of the unit - it could just be dirt that would clean up with a bit of cleanser - I don't know - but it sure looks fine to me. I don't have the space of desire for one of these but I know there are those out there who might. You can contact him at:

[email protected]

He can send other pictures of what he has for sale - there is also another pretty worn looking GE Monitor top fridge - he said that the compressor unit was sitting somewhere in his sotrage area but I couldn't see it in the pictures he e-mailed me. It seems I can only download one photo here per comment in the thread. Next entry after someone replies to this I can post the other picture of the inside of the nicer one. He also has a Pepsi and a few Coke dispensing machines for sale. I have pics of them too but again I can only post one picture here at a time.

Jim, you can go ahead and reply to your own thread to post the additional pics.  I love those old Monitor tops!  They're so simple, quiet and efficient.  Any idea what he might be asking?

Any idea what he might be asking?

Hi Neil,

Well, here's another pic or two. Sal knows he has something that's really fine, but he did say to me that he would like it to go to a home that would really appreciate it, so I don't know what he'll take for it. I did tell him that a completely reconditioned one - new insulation, new wire, new porcelaining, re-nickel plating for the racks, new paint etc., etc, have gone for as much as $2K on Craigslist and Ebay. But since it looks to me from this other picture that something had been in it and stained the floor of the unit inside - could have been a keg maybe? - with that in mind you may just offer him what you think it's worth in the condition it is in and see what he says. But look at those racks - they still look pretty shiny to me from this picture. The original model sticker is still on the door and the unit has one of those foot pedals to open the door too. I'll post the other pics he sent me below.

WAIT

I just got an email from Sal - he said that the newer one didn't have the compressor but from the photos he sent me it sure looks like it is on the top and the compressor is missing from the older unit - which he clarified was available. I asked that he log onto this site to clarify if he would like to. So maybe anyone interested best contact him directly at his email address (above) with any other questions.

Clarification about these two units

The following is an email I just got form Sal:

In the photo, the new box is on the left and it has the compressor from the unit on the right sitting on the top of it. I slid it over but never slid it back. So what I have is one complete GE Monitor in well used condition and one brand new GE Monitor, box only (no compressor).

He should leave the compressor on the newer box.  That's where it truly belongs.

The other well-used looking box is way too old for that compressor to have been the original for it.  That compressor unit is the typical one you would find on a box that has the pedal to open the door.  Maybe the guy is confused or has forgotten which box had what on it.  The older box should have the earlier type of compressor where the coils are visible and not wrapped in a shroud, and cold control is located in a separate box on the flat surface of the compressor unit.  The older box is also a smaller capacity, and the correct compressor unit would also be smaller than the newer one.

That stain may clean up.  The box is in beautiful shape and if that compressor works, it would make a great machine for someone.

He should leave the compressor on the newer box.

I agree with who completely. But if it did come from the fridge on the right in his picture, then if the new box on the left is larger, the top wouldn't necessarily fit it would it?

Now that you've mentioned it, and upon closer examination, that compressor unit is too small for the later cabinet. It doesn't cover the whole top.

I think those two cabinets and the compressor unit need to land in the hands of a collector who might have spare components to make correct machines out of both of them.
