in the market for a new washer - help?

The Ariston brand doesn't exist anymore, I guess it got killed in the problems with the Indesit company. The washing machine linked is the same as the Hotpoint Experience:

finalists

ok, so I have to give up on the knob controls, as expected. The new requirement list is as follows:

- 110V
- internal heater
- separate rinse-only cycle (since I cannot mix/match cycles, this is the closest I can get to a temp-controlled prewash)
- fits under counter (less than 34" high)
- under $1000

The only options available in the US seem to be:

GE WCVH4800KWW
Electrolux EIFLS20QSW

The electrolux has the steam advantage, but many reviews mention a failed board (that's why I hate digital!!!). The GE doesn't have steam and reviews report balance and other quality issues.

I would do the lux before I would do the GE...

I do not like GE's non-American machines.

American made machines are EXPENSIVE and aren't any better than foreign made ones. In fact, many of the foreign made machines are much better. So lots of luck. I have had good luck so far with my LG made washer and dryer front loader. Does a remarkable job on everything, but I've said that before. I just got the new consumer reports which has a feature on new washers. It rates LG front load washers top as far as having no repairs within the first 4 years. Also rates LG dryers top in that respect too. I would go with whatever is the best priced unit with all the features you want. I'm leery of combo washer/dryer machines - more components to break!

Bruce, right on all counts, expensive AND crap shoot! Maybe I'm just putting way too much thought into this.

I have this Electrolux. I like it a lot. It gives you good cycle control. If you look in the manual you will see all of your actual cycle choices. You can add a rinse to any cycle. I am not aware of any but possibly the most high-end machines that will allow you to select a hot rinse, or even a warm rinse. I have not yet read any reviews about board failure in this machine. I certainly believe that it is possible because all of the newer machines are likely to experience board failures; electronics, heat, and water are not a good mix. Because my laundry area could take a vented dryer and vented dryers dry faster, I bought the GE compact electric dryer. I did not buy the matching Electrolux dryer, which is a condenser dryer as reportedly all condenser dryers heat the room they are in.

the verdict!

so the Electrolux it is! It arrived 2 weeks ago and so far so good. It has a rinse and spin cycle which I set to 'no spin' and use it as a cold prewash. It only takes 6 minutes and does the job of wetting the clothes so that they don't get shocked by the hot water of the sanitizing cycle. It's also very roomy and I find I don't have enough clothes to fill it! But that's a good problem to have

So far I don't like three things: there is an alarm at the end of the cycle that cannot be turned off permanently (you can turn it off at that moment but you cannot disable it completely); once you start a cycle you cannot stop it unless you unplag the machine; the touch-screen is spiffy but does get stuck some times and I am worried that it will not last long-run.

Anyway, the die is cast! I'll post updates as time goes by. THANKS to all of you who offered feedback and made this decision easier!
