Just bought this sight-unseen Maytag washer from a cancer fund-raiser yard sale (long story) for $50. After much effort, it arrived at my home (what is this thing made of? Cast iron?) One look & I was very disappointed. It seemed too old to work well & is pretty dirty. Was about to put it on Craigslist.

BUT having read about this model on this site now that I've stumbled on it, I'm not only going to keep it, but wish I'd bought the dryer, too! (Especially since my dryer picked today to start making horrible noises.)

Can anyone help me with the date? I read the thread with the text version of the serial number code for dating, but couldn't understand it.

Model number: A806
Serial number: 207885 KY

It has a chrome rim on the lint filter, bleach dispenser is front right, and control trim looks like it was turquoisey-definitely not gold, but faded/rubbed off now. There are pushbuttons for regular or gentle wash, regular or slow spin, 3 wash temps & 2 rinse temps, and 4 load sizes. Chrome trim, white tub turquoise agitator. The acrylic knob has dk gray & turquoise lettering. Some parts look too new for the rest of the machine, so suspect they are replacements (acrylic knob, tub)

Anything else you can advise me on, I'd appreciate.

An A806 is nearly top of the line. Higher capacity, Pretty much all the options a Maytag washer could have. The control panel is glass and should light up, if not, it may need a new florescent bulb (under the back of the console, 2 screws).

Serial KY means it was made in November 1970. The lint filter is stainless steel, not chrome, and is correct for the machine. The bleach dispenser is for real, is not just a funnel into the tub but dispenses over time gradually diluting the bleach. There should be a tub light- be careful with the tub light lens, its under the rim at the 3 o clock position. They are NLA.

I have a 1971 A806 as my daily driver. Nothing too exciting but bulletproof. How about a picture?

Sure! As soon as I figure out this new digital camera I just bought to replace the one stolen. On the agenda for today, anyhow.

I have an A806S, and a HOH DE606 and love them dearly. You'll find this to be the most dependable and durable washer you will ever own. I bought my set for $60 from a young kid who wanted to "modernize" the laundry room in the house he had just bought.

MTs SO CALLED TIMED BLEACH DISPENSER

MTs separate chamber LCB dispenser did hold the bleach until the washer started agitating, but in less than 1 minute all the bleach was in in the wash water. You can try it your self by pouring bluing in the dispenser and its all gone in a minute. It was no where comparable or as good as what KM & WP and several makers had where the bleach interduction was delayed to the last 4 minutes. I sure this is why MT discontinued this system as it added very little advantage.

Good Manners

Its perfect normal and acceptable to have strong opinions when asked. Its sometimes hurtful to disparage the acquitions of others especially if they are pleased with thier choice.

MAYTAG WASHERS

I am sorry if my discussion on the MT [ timed bleach dispenser ] offended anyone. I did not disparage any ones choice of machines, I do not dislike Maytags, if I did I drought I would have more than a dozen in our museum alone. To me this site is to learn about classic appliances and that means both the good and the bad, I am just as quick to criticize any brand, and in fact I had just paid MT DC washers a nice complaint on the deluxe forum under a discussion on new SQ top loading washers. After all the site is not called the Maytag collectors club where we all stick our heads in the sand and never have any critical discussion of anything relating to Maytag.

I have a Maytag 806/606 and it's a great washer. I replaced the belts, motor glides and springs and a new water inlet valve, and outer tub clamp, and she purrs like a kitten.
