A new message had begun popping up when I have to log in to AW.org. It warns that the connection is not secure when I type in my user name and that logins entered here could be compromised. Whuzat mean?

Means that all or some part of the log-in process is not encrypted/SSL like a banking site, online shopping cart, etc. (which isn't particularly-much important for AW since it's not a financial-type site.)

The advisory is a new-ish feature of Firefox, being helpful to users for security-consciousness.

However, I don't get that advisory.  Does your URL for the log-in screen start with https and have a green lock/security icon?

Yes Tom Glenn is right, if you landed on the http page for login you should go to the https page. Should happen when you click-login.
