This is an interesting double wide vintage stove near Winnipeg Canada and I can't make out the name. Neat control panel

Apparently it's a Westinghouse by the looks of this similar looking one for sale

Hmmm... Looks like a Gurney - the slanted name plate looks like the way they used to brand them.

I don't see much ressemblance between control panels.

The handles are very "early" Westinghouse, as well. Do you think Gurney's were re-badged?

I can't tell you when Tappan bought Gurney but in the 1960's Tappan appliances were often called "Tappan-Gurney" in Canada.

I have also seen 1970's appliances badged as "Gurney" like this Corning cooktop.

 At this point, they seemed to have some similarities with Belanger and Whirlpool appliances.

 

Here's a Gurney 30" wall oven. A friend of mine has a 24" model like it. My aunt has self-cleaning Belanger that looks identical to the 30" Gurney pictured (it even has the same motif on the control panel glass). We had the same at my job but it was badged as Whirlpool (and it wasn't self-cleaning).

 

If anyone knows more about Gurney appliances, I'd like to have more info about them.

The company was called the Gurney Foundry Co.   .. there are a few articles about them on google.  Originally started out as the E & C Gurney Co in Toronto and then changed to Gurney Foundry Co in the 20's..  Somewhere they joined with Northern Electric to produce their first electric stoves.

I wasn't aware of that.

 

My grandpa worked for Northern Electric and he got a Leonard fridge soon after the war in the 1940's. He told me these were made by Kelvinator. The fridge had a big Northern Electic badge just above the handle. When I was a kid, I remember getting cereal boxes from the storage drawer under it. Last week, I have seen in a friend's garage another (newer I think) Leonard fridge with a very similar badge and door design but it didn't have a storage drawer.

After searching for some 1970's Gurney appliances yesterday,  I found a local ad with the Corning cooktop posted above.  Today, I decided to make an offer on it and I bought it.  It's stained as most of these are but at that price, I didn't care much!

After some cleaning, it does look a bit better, as you might notice, I spent a bit more time cleaning the worst stained part on the top right burner than I did on the rest! Can someone tell me what's the purpose of the chrome plate above the controls on the right? It's removeable and there's a hole behind it.

Can someone tell me if I'm right thinking Gurney was the same as Belanger and Whirlpool in this period? And what happened to the association with Tappan?

Top Right Burner

PhilR I bet the reason it was the most stained as on the older smooth top units this was the burner that would take the metal pots and pans even a pressure cooker or canner.  We had an Ammana very like this one only in black from 1979.  The other burners you could use regular post and pans but took longer to cooke did better with th eCorning smooth bottom ones.
