I just noticed on the back of a free car calendar I received in the mail, titled G.M. Classics, a note titled, "Did you know" This may have been posted before, but it was new to me.
GM bought Frigidaire in 1918 out of concerns that the government would decree automobiles "inessential" to the war effort and halt their production. Food preservation was essential to the war, so the refrigerator company (which had sold only 40 refrigerators at the time) was GM's entire hedge if the U.S. Gobernment elected to shut down the auto industry.
