I just picked up another mid-80s Maytag the other day and to my horror it began banging loudly during the spin cycle. The guy I bought it from said he had disconnected the lid switch but he apparently forgot to remove the switch. When I opened up the machine to find out what all the banging was about, I found the lid switch had lodged itself between the outer tub and the top of the washer. Thankfully it had managed to move to the front so was easy to spot and wedge it out. Now all is tranquil in Fabricmatic Land!
