It's a funny thing. I've got nick names for all my machines except one. There is Kaydee (KD2-P)...Maydee (for 70 GE Mobile Maid,KenWhirl 2004, The Busted 56 Mobile Maid which that A--H--e sent me back the busted motor,La Regina, and The KDS 18 which I just refer to the Superba, because I think it the best cleaning machine. I sit here at the keyboard listening to this new machine and DAMN that thing has got some b--ls. It's amazing how that thing is just cleaning like this woman I bought from has not heard this machine perform in years.

Open it up for some exploratory surgery!

Pull off the door panel and make sure the wires to the dispenser haven't rusted off or that the door just isn't stuck.
You will see if there is anything wrong with the mechanism when you have the panel off. Sometimes the doors are forced open and they rotate around the shaft so that the roll pin is out of place. You will see what I mean when you look at it. If you need bimetal heaters, I have them for you

Can you open it manually?

The '89 Maytag in the house in Ogden had a similar issue, but it was due to detergent build up. I was able to flush it out and trip the cup open manually until it went by itself. It was a spring-loaded trigger on it, though. Yours looks like a solenoid is controlling the cup release. THAT is pretty cool if it is!
Worst comes to worst, I guess you could just toss in some detergent at the start of the cycle and the first pre-rinse could become the pre-wash...
 
Wow does this bring back memories of growing up. My parents had a KDD-67 it was just a basic machine with the porcelain top and 2 push buttons...full cycle and rinse hold button. That machine was a workhorse for 7 people. I used to run it twice a day. One load would be pots and pans and the other would be dishes. Always had to make sure the top rack got water or nothing got clean up there. Especially the glass bottoms. Often times I would find bits of food up there...but good machine overall. That machine lasted about 6 years then I got a Maytag WC302...what a difference. It held more and washed much better...even though it was kinda loud when it was washing. I did like the reverse racking. Once i got used to it it made sense.

I can open it manually. The mechinism (sp?) is free, locks shut like it should, We'll see...
Here's the top after 7 good soakings with Greased Lightning. I'm on my way to get sandpaper. Any ideas for what oil to use on the top ???????? 30 some odd years of goop.

Oil for your top

I have a butcher block in my kitchen that was my mothers and she always used mineral oil on it. I have sanded it and used that on it also. Still looks as good as it did 40 years ago. You can pick up a small bottle at most drug stores.

Dates and doors!

The machine was built sometime bewteen 08-72 and 08-76.

The detergent door may have been slightly stuck and you may have loosened whatever it was that was causing it to bind, but also, the bi metals work by the motor amperage being pulled thru them to activate them. If there is too little water, the pump would draw less amperage and thus less heat would build up to bend the bimetal and release the door. This being a portable and you living in a multiple dwelling, is it possible that somneone was using the water at the time causing a short fill condition? Then today you got a full charge of water and it worked fine!
Just one suggestion for what happened!

Also, it looks like they used the 15 series pump bottom and the 16/17 series pump top with that style strainer but there is no water feed to the top for the constant rinse sprayer.
Does your machine have the constant rinse on it? Might explain why nmaineman had the "yibbles" on top of his glasses.
But I am sure it still washes like crazy!
 
Crusher update!

Ed, I went back to the place where the Imperial 16 was waiting for its demise today and it was gone! SO! the search will continue for spares for you. With the economy worsening, there are alot more guys traveling around picking up this kind of scrap metal before the sanitation guys get there. I cannot even get to my favorite appliance place before them to scout for possibilities lately.

And now the Lowes by me have signs posted that the machines are not free for the taking but are "property of Lowes" for removal by a specific appliance company. I have seen these appliance guys..another pair of guys with a trailer attached to an Aerostar grabbing the(white)goods!
 
The KDD-67 did not have the overhead constant rinse. I dont know if the KDR does have it ...I would highly doubt it though. I have seen a KDD 68B that had the middle arm and top arm...i wish i had that machine..it would have made life so much easier. The pump in this dishwasher is very powerful. Very straight forward and simple.What i did love about the machine was when it turned on the pump kicked on and then the water would come in and the machine used to make this whooshing sound that was unique I thought at the time until I heard a Whirlpool PowerClean Dishwasher. The one I had used to run when the wash cycle started before the water was in it. My Miele runs without water then adds it and will stop and add more if needed. But no where near as loud.

The water pressure is very good here in the house. We have a 3/4 in feed. You can have the washer,dishwasher, lawn sprinkler on and still take a shower with plenty of pressure.But you know starting from the KD2 and now the Regency, these are true "dishwashers. I change all my prep habits when I am using these machines. I love them very much and enjoy using them, but I miss BobLoading them. I use all plates, saucers and anything flat for my prep for dinner, that way if there is any room in the upper rack for a pot or skillet I can get that in.
With that said, there is no Constant Rinse.
Mike , you are right about the noise when it's filling with water. The machine is very noisey when it is about 1/2 to3/4 of the way through the fill cycle, but once that last bit of water gets there it is actually pretty quiet for a machine of that era.
We'll see if the dispensor opens on it's own tonight.
