Ireland/UK/EU - Narrow fridge-freezers? Any ideas?

A friend of mine needs a narrow fridge-freezer to slot into a very tight space, replacing an existing one that's only 490mm wide. There's at absolute most 500mm available and even that's a pinch.

We looked around online and the only brands that seem to do that width are all really low-end - store brands, LEC, Swan etc and I couldn't find anything that was frost free. They're all pretty primitive, cheap models.

Has anyone encountered a good quality fridge-freezer that width? The other alternative is some major cabinetry work and attempting to widen the space to 600mm+

Would stacking a separate freezer and fridge be an option?

Well, potentially if they added a shelf, but it would look pretty ugly.

With a little strip of metal or so you could make it look a bit more like one unit. Making something like that would be less of a hassle than redoing the kitchen.

I doubt you would find any quality brands at that size, you really need a space of about 57cm to accomodate a unit 55cm wide - you are then in the Bosch, Liebherr territory

Even the most basic fridge-freezers now seem to be a minimum of 55cm. I suspect that all the Eco ratings nonsense have forced manufacturers to ditch small capacities for more efficiency per cubic foot - plus an extra layer of insulation.

What brand was the outgoing machine?
