Ironrite Ironer on Craigslist in CT

I found this listing for an ironer on CL, and thought that I would share it. Seems like a good one, though a bit pricey.

What I found interesting is the seller's comments at the end of the listing--"incessant scamming and spamming on Craigslist". I always have a few items listed for sale on CL, and I have set up an email account specifically for CL. In my listings, I tell the responder to change the subject line, so I can tell whether or not it is a real person, or some kind of automated response. Those I forward to spam at craigslist.org.

Never had a problem with the spam; just an annoyance. Apparently, the seller of this ironer has had more problems.

Considering the until is in great shape (will need new muslin though) and the price includes the chair I don't think that's too bad a price. It doesn't look like it was stored in some moist old basement either.

And boy oh boy will he be sorry he put his telephone number in the advert!

Telehone Number In CL Advert

Seems to be happening more and more. From what one understands sellers are just sick and tired of spammers, scammers, and such flooding their email inboxes. CL does not screen responses so you pretty much have to weed through on your own.

As for the Ironrite, yes that is a good price for a unit that seems in good condition and includes the chair with owner's manual.

Because of their size and heft ironers in particular Ironrites often have a limited market, usually local. Unless one has something that is NIB, rare color, model or some such most listing sit untouched. Ironrites in particular because of the gear oil have to be transported carefully which allot of persons rather not bother.

I saw and posted something similar...my mom had one of these. Looking at it is eery, as I can see her there, and each shirt, skirt, blouse and pants being ironed..hear the sound of it operating, the smell of the heat and laundry as it's pressed, and the basement gas heater making a alternating upper and lower high pitch sound(normal) while she whisked through the pile. I haven't seen this machine in over 40 years; when polyester clothes became the greatest thing, she retired the iron and sold or gave it away. Thanks for posting.

CL Telephone Numbers

I find that when trying to sell something on CL, I get responses both by email and by phone. I list my cellphone number, not the house number. Phone calls (or text messages to the phone) have not been a problem for me. I actually prefer them over email--makes for a quicker sale.

CL & Similar Sites Have Become A Mine Field Of Late

Scammpers, spammers, criminals, you name it and they are on CL. Personally never warmed up to the idea of having total strangers come to one's home to collect an item, but assume if one has "back-up" protection it is ok. However there are just too many horror stories of theft and worse happening to those answering and or posting CL adverts of late.

In and of themselves there are so many Ironrites out there in decent enough condition they rarely go for major money. Ditto most other ironers with the exception of modern offerings from Miele, Pfaff and such. Even in Germany and other EU countries (the former being the last bastion of mangles/ironers/ and such), things rarely go for major money unless they are rare or unique. Just too much supply.

In Germany at least the other problem is the insane amount of taxes on any sort of shipping unless done "off the books". Most eBay.de sellers of large items state flat out "no shipping", meaning local pick-up only. Also one didn't know this but say one is moving house and wants to take appliances out of Germany to France for instance, IIRC under most circumstances you will have to pay some sort of tax or show papers proving the age and or use of the thing.
