Karen went to our local dry cleaners this morning and said that there was a mangle sitting in the middle of the waiting area but the woman who runs the place said it stopped working. So since it was only a couple of blocks away I figured I'd go by and see if I could help.

This Ironrite looks like it's in brand new condition. The woman who runs the place said a customer gave it to her because she hasn't used it in a long time. She said it worked perfectly for about 6 months until one of our famous thunderstorms came by and it got hit with a power surge. Now it doesn't even turn on nor do any of the lights come on much less heat up.

Anyone have any idea what may have happened to it? Or at least a place to start looking in it? She'd really like to get it going again but nobody wants to work on it.

If it doesn't run or heat most likely power is not getting to the switches. It would be highly unlikely for both switches (motor and heat) to fail at the excact same time. Not sure, but I don't think there is a circuit breaker built into an ironrite, but I could be wrong. I would check for power at the end of the cord.

Thank you for the reply Robert, I appreciate it.
I had never seen one of these in person before. I seem to remember them being larger. Maybe because the last time I saw one in person was when I was a kid?

But it was in perfect condition. Not a scratch on it and the fabric roll was as clean as new. I told the woman to have the oil changed and to NEVER tip the machine over as it could leak.

I'll go over with my meter and tell her I would be willing to look at it.

Would Have To Check

One's copy of the Ironrite repair manual but am guessing the power surge fried or did something to an electrical connection inside the unit.

Ironrites were rather simple mechanically controlled appliances without computers or electronics so there isn't much else a power surge could damage. Did you try plugging another appliance into the outlet or otherwise test to see if there is power?
