90 degree wash
Just wash at 90 or 95 degrees once a month! It should help!
I find that a medium squirt of washing up liquid should help!

... wash at higher temparatures should help the machine. We used to do a 30 degree wash a lot in the Newwave but then after a wash [ maintinance ] at 90, we use 60 a lot!

Generally speaking European machines don't have a maintenance cycle at all....and none of the handbooks until very recently (if now at all!) will even talk about it.
Basically, if you are:
- using a powdered detergent;
- generally doing warm or hot (40-60c) washes; and
- not heavy on fabric conditioner....
...you won't need to do one...EVER
On the other hand......if you:
- use a liquid;
- wash at cooler temperatures (30c - cold) without ever using 60c; and
- are a heavy fabric conditioner user.....
....then you may need to do one every couple of months. Just select the longest, hottest programme and use a 1/2 scoop of powdered detergent.....no clothes.
If your machine has no offensive odour, that is, it smells very faintly of washing powder or 'clean', or obvious mould in the door boot, I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.

As ronhic says, you won't really need to do one unless you do almost all your laundry at cold or 30, or use an awful lot of liquids and fabric softener.

me i mostly wash in cold water and use liquid detergents as well as liquid fabric softner from time to time and i never needed to do a maitnance cleaning cycle on my washer. and if i had to do one it would be with afresh tabs or tide cleaner or half a cup of white vinegar in the water in the tub to clean the washer.

Thats weird, I wouldn't use softener for towels as that makes them go hard over time! (From my Experience) Though clothes I do use fabric softener.
I always use tablets, as they are pre measured, no over or under dosing, though I do perform a maintenance wash about once very 4-5 months, usually with a kind of Citric acid (you know hotpoint washing machine cleaner-the old stuff!) and occasionally with Bleach, and I run it on a cottons 95.
I do occasionally wash at 95 anyway with tea towels, though usually only wash at max 60C, and that's enough to keep it clean anyway.
Just use 95C once every few months and it will be fine.

I do the opposite - I *never* use fabric softener on towels 'cause I hate how it makes them soak up less, and if I do use it it is on clothes and bedlinen, but not all the time.
