So I bought this fridge that was still working. It's only 6.5 cubic feet but the cabinet is very art deco and in excellent like-new condition. I replaced the door gasket and had new shelves made up. The electrician said he couldn't install a new plug because all the wiring insulation was falling off. Got all the wiring replaced, plus new relay, plus new thermostat. I was so happy because it was cooling beautifully.
One day I turn the thermostat off while the compressor was running, and immediately tried to turn it back on, but the compressor didn't come back on. I left the refrigerator off and re-tried the next day. It would run a few seconds and shut off. Next day the same. On the third day it would run for a while and when I went back it had cooled a few degrees and shut off. That's where we are: the top of the freezer gets cold but the walls don't seem to cool much (it's a "Cold Wall").
I am so heart broken. No appliance repairman will go near it, and the person helping so far is a licensed solar installer and electrician and I'm not sure refrigeration systems are his area.
Do I have a solution here? Or do I buy a new compressor and condenser and install that -- and if so, what item would I buy?
The fridge has 14 ounces of R-114 in the system. When it shuts off prematurely, I hear gurgling, but not always.
I am determined to get this fridge working. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks to one of this forum's members for sending me a PDF of the service manual. I appreciate any advice. Yes I'm a girl but I'm pretty mechanical!
