Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That tv belongs to "bygted" from Maryland. If you look at his other listings on ebay, there is one for a Natalie Kalmus tv, which was refrenced in this thread.

Hey now

Those old color tv's have more value to a greater number of people than an old washer.

Travis, I know, but the asking price is still inexplicable imo. These sets must be much rarer in some parts of the country than others. In my part of CA it's tough to walk in a house and not find a set from the 50's/60's/70's. A quick eBay check shows two similar vintage 50's sets currently for sale, a working one at $325 BIN and a non-working set at $50 with no bids. So at $2400 I think the seller is targeting the same group who pays $1500 for Ben-Hur refrigerator medallions.

Um,

That set is an RCA Stanwyck, built on the CTC-5 chassis for the 1956-57 model year. Just the picture tube alone is worth good money if it hasn't gone to air.

These things really do have a collector following, and complete, sound examples are very hard to find; many have been scavenged for parts or stored in basement/garage areas where humidity has considerably complicated a restorer's task. These are very sensitive, very easily damaged pieces of early color TV electronics; they went out of whack if you breathed on them. My dad was with RCA as a service tech during these years, and the hissy fits early color TVs threw paid for our house and everything in it.

Based on what I've seen in the collector market, I don't think this is out of line, price-wise.

Jeff, I realize that 2400 is way too high for this. 500 would be more like it, if you wanted it! It's like anything else, you have to want it and then be willing to go after it.

Here is my take on the pricing

I figured that this ebay auction of mine would find it's way to the site.
I am probably getting slammed pretty hard on the videokarma site.

Here is my rationale:
A Mahogany version of this set sold on ebay several months back in as found unrestored condition for around 2k - it had a lot of bids.

I am a collector first and foremost but it's nice to make money here and there as well.
I figured I would put it out there around the price the last one went for and if someone was seriously interested they would make a fair offer.
For me -$500 is not a "fair offer" for this particular set (retail - anyway).

I know we all like to get deals on stuff and go out to sales and score stuff for super cheap - that is awesome... but there is a market that fluctuates for certain antiques and I felt that my pricing was within reason for what it is.

And,on the flip side- if there is no interest after a couple listing tries - I am just as happy to keep it.
There is certainly no harm in testing the waters of capitalism :)

I sell other stuff and trade -etc - I always try to put a reasonable -realistic -real world price on stuff - but once in a while you come by something that is a bit extra special.

This posting is not meant to offend anyone who thinks differently than I do... or tell them that their opinion is wrong - just wanted to put my side out there.

Those guys on Audiokarma can be pretty ruthless. I had an early RCA color set that I found at a neighbor's house when they were doing clean-out that I listed on ebay. It was in great shape, unrestored, as is. You would have thought I was trying to assassinate the queen mother. They ripped everything about the set and the listing to shreds and even at one point accused me of trying to cheat buyers because the legs seemed to be shorter than they were supposed to be - as if I gnawed them off myself. I listed it with no reserve and starting price of like $100 or so. It did sell but the accusations, name-calling and bullsh*t on Audiokarma may have dissuaded some from considering a bid - all based on nothing. None of these people had seen the set, none had asked any questions of me directly and the likely scenario is that almost none of them could even afford to bid, no matter what the price.

Best of luck to you, Ted, it is a beautiful set.

Just my opinion...
The set is beautiful, but to bring that price it would have to be in museum condition, and working flawlessly. With that being said... an item is worth what someone will pay for it. If I had it on an ebay listing, I'd probably set a reserve in that range and have the bidding start lower.
And yes.. the people on VK CAN get pretty nasty. I even got some heat when Greg listed his set (I think a CTC-7) that was extremely rare because of the remote control features his had.
A CT-100 (RCA's first color set)will bring anywhere from 2500-4000 IF the picture tube is good, and brings the higher end of that range if its been restored.
That model is the exception because it is near impossible to find one with a picture tube that hasn't "gone to air". The picture tube was a glass/metal combonation, that just didn't hold up and even RCA had problems when they were rebuilding the tubes.
Bygted-- Your set has a proven good picture tube, and would need little work to restore. I totally agree with your reasoning for the price. If it sells for that amount, fantastic! If it doesn't, than keeping it is a good thing as well. It just gets rarer the longer you keep it :)

Cool set and right on! Someone isn't going to offer more than you ask, you can always consider an offer. But a cool set like that is a rare find that you can enjoy if it doesn't sell!

Ctc-5

I have a 1956 CTC5,with the orig pic tube dated Aug 13th 1956,its the one,I think its an Aldridge, but in the ad it sold for 750.00,its the Deluxe they had 2 chassis that year also a super,I got mine in 72 when I first moved out on my own at 19,Ive not spent much on it all these years, recapped here and there, and a few tubes used it all the time until about 7 years ago,now I watch special things on it like Christmas Shows,I luv to watch Charlie Brown Christmas on it.Mine has panaramic sound speaker in front on side of pic tube, kinda Danish looking cabinet. Its do for a good recapping, the circuit boards look so brittle now,its a bottom mounted chassis, the ctc7 is side mounted, its a well built set.It went to Calif with me and back home 2years later and didnt have to reconverge it,shocked me.It appears in the pic with it off its had a pic tube replaced,it looks green. The orig tube is almost white when its not on.Its a 21axp22a
