does sound like the refrigerant leaked out or compressor has bad valve or other
fault...
Had a 1986 fedders AC leak it's charge-a rubber vibration damper on one of the
condenser pipes crumbled,letting the pipe vibrate from the compressor and develop
a crack...with the refrigerant gone the AC sounded"funny"-compressor sounded
"unloaded"and there was a faint hissing noise from the evap coil.
 
No hissing noises, but the motor does sound like it's running easier. The compressor is running, you can hear it start up and continue running blowing cool air out from under the refrigerator.

The good thing is that I didn't unwrap any of the parts I bought for it. They are all in their original plastic FSP packs and the fan motor is still sealed in it's box. So they are going back to appliance repair parts.com.

As for the current refrigerator we are done with it. The freezer door has been rusting through under the water/ice dispenser. After all the headaches we've had with it, we'll be glad when it leaves the house.

The link leads to the refrigerator that will replace the Whirlpool. We didn't pay anywhere near the price on the GE website. The only thing I didn't like about it was the ice maker takes up so much of the freezer. But I like the fact that the door shelves can all take gallon jugs.

We looked at bottom freezers, french door models, etc. But I didn't like the fact that you had to bend down low to get any ice out of them. Plus getting older, it's a pain to have to bend over for the first hour after I awake. Old age makes you stiff. (Toggles, slap in advance). We even looked at a few conventional freezers on top models. Those were cheap. But the only brands they had in that kind were LG, Samsung and Frigidaire. I didn't want a LG or Samsung and I'm not up to date with the track record of Frigidaire refrigerators. We don't entertain as much as we used to, it's just the two of us so why do we need a big refrigerator?

WE had the same, exactally the same, problem with one of the two Whirlcrap S/S refrigerators we bought at work. One in the volunteer work room, one in the employees lounge. The one in the lounge had the compressor replaced twice under warranty, when the director finally said throw it out. It was replaced with a F&P bottom freezer, no more problems.

The one in the Volunteer room has never given a moments trouble. They must have just had a bad run in Mexico that year.

KM top freezer fridge has a matsushita compressor(marked "made in usa"though
japanese brand)IIRC,i heard on this site that some brazilian"embraco"compressors
have been troublesome(my '99 brazilian-made WP mini fridge-embraco compressor-has
been great though)
In any case,does sound like your fridge leaked the charge...
The japanese compressor in my '85 absocold mini fridge went bad-motor developed
short between start and run windings;would sluggishly start up,start to cool,then
trip out on overtemp-was pulling 6a when 1.5a was normal...

Be aware those GE units have tons of electronics.  Can't say for sure about your selected model, but my Arctica has a motherboard that controls everything, all the fans (condensor and three inside) are DC-powered variable speed, the compressor is variable speed run by a separate power module, and it has a rather complex operating process regards to defrosting and such.

Glen, I know I'm a little bit worried about that. But the electronics are in everything these days. Even the electronics in the WP TL electronic machines are still working. I just hope I'm not buying a lemon. One thing I forgot to check was is the ice cube reservoir removable in this new GE? I didn't check that. That was one of the thing I liked about the WP, you could take the ice bin out and take it to the sink and wash it out. The new fridge doesn't come until Tues aftn so there still is time to change our mind.
 
How badly do you need the icemaker? If you and Karen can live with trays, have you considered a simple top freezer model, maybe with the stainless steel surface. When Consumer Reports compiled the repair record, top freezer models without icemaker were equally reliable. I know its taking a step backwards but you may have to for reliability anymore.

By the way, aren't the Airbus planes all electronic, with no cables?
 
We did look at top freezer models. The store that was having the biggest sales on refrigerators only had LG, Samsung & Frigidaire top freezer models. They all could come in SS. All of them offered and ice maker as an option. We could have saved $1500 by going that route.

But we didn't want LG or Samsung and we didn't know how good (or bad) Frigidaire
refrigerators are these days.
 
Allen the Frigidaire all refrigerator and all freezers are pretty good if you have the room for them.  They can come in stainless  and for both will be about the same as the GE.  We  got these at our church 5 years ago have 2 of the refer's and one freezer.  Fairly heavy usage as we have Wednesday night meals year round plus other things.  The freezer could have come with ice maker but we have the big stand alone ice maker.  So far they have held up well and no problems.  They have a good fell opening and closing not the tinny feeling but solid.

 

 
 
That's an alternative that didn't even cross our minds. And an interesting one at that. In this house we would have no room to put them. Our kitchen here is only 10 x 15, and that includes an eat in kitchen. It's going to be a very tight squeeze getting this new refrigerator even in the house let alone in the space provided for it. We have to take the storm door off the house, disassemble a wall long bookshelf and unload all the books, records, etc. Then relocate the grandfather clock and move furniture around all the while there is no room to put any of this stuff except for the alloted spaces it belongs in. We downsized from a 3600' sq ft house to a 1450 sq. ft. house about 7 years ago.

And we have been regretting it ever since. We can't buy anything for the house unless something in the house leaves.
 
The other question you do want to ask yourself is how much freezer do you need?

Our fridge has the standard top freezer and it's good enough.

When I was growing up, my parents bought a fridge with a very small freezer inside of it, it could hold a 2 liter box of ice cream and that was about it. We used a 24 cu.ft deep freeze in the basement for anything freezer related.

As for the space thing, we live in a 1000 sq.ft house and have ample room. The trick is getting all of the right stuff at Ikea to make everything fit. :)

I don't know how reliable ice maker fridges are in comparison to ones that are just straight fridges, but my guess would be less complexity = more reliability.
 
You know, we've lived in condo's, townhomes before and all of them had simple top freezer refridgerators. I didn't hear any complaints. Now the more I think about it, I really don't like the SxS thin depth of the freezer or refrigerator. The GE we bought isn't scheduled to be delivered til Tues, so I think we may go back and do more refrigerator shopping today.

If I could find a bottom freezer with ice maker, I think that's what we really want in the first place.
 
Well, we went back and looked and it seemed the only models they had in stock were the bottom freezer kind that pulled out like a drawer, but only to find a second set of doors in there. After cycling that system for awhile, it seemed like the inner and outer doors played a game of "too many doors" and I could see after awhile some of the plastic interior cracking/falling apart from too many collisions between the doors.
So we just stuck with the GE SxS.

Another thing. Does anyone here need any parts from the old WP? There are shelves, door racks/shelves and bins. They are all in mint condition. There is also the ice maker and bucket, which has never failed. In mint condition also.

Anyone who wants these things is welcome to them for only the cost of packing and shipping to you. If you are interested, please let me know. The WP fridge was also sold under the KitchenAid & Kenmore names.
 
Believe it or not, it hasn't been delivered yet!
The reason being is that we have a long wall that has a built in bookcase floor to ceiling loaded with books, records, cd's, etc that was built after our old refrigerator was installed. It has to be unloaded and disassembled before the old refrigerator can leave and the new one can be installed. It's quite a job and we have been so busy with other projects in the mean time. We tentatively have the new refrigerator set for delivery this Thursday.

In the meantime we have been living out of a Coleman ice chest. Not too bad, nor inconvenient. We buy a $1.50 bag of ice per day and it keeps the ice chest at 37F.
Of course if we buy anything frozen it has to be cooked that night, but we keep just the basics in there and it really hasn't been too bad. I would even go as far as to say we have almost have not been inconvenienced at all.

All I Can Say Is....

My last Whirlpool refrigerator was my last Whirlpool refrigerator.

Total compressor replacement just out of warranty, and then the new one failed as well.

That fridge is probably some Kia owner's front fenders and hood now.

A 3 year old Hotpoint...When it quits you can bet there will be a manual defrost something at least 50 years old that dosent freezer burn everything!!!
 
We've had out GE SxS 30.0 refrigerator for two years now. It's still operating flawlessly. It's a big unit, but the place we bought it at had it on offer for 50% off. Normally this is a $3200, refrigerator but we got it for $1749.00

The only thing I don't like about it is that the water that comes out of the freezer door tastes like burnt plastic. We replaced the filter a few times, but the water still has a strange taste to it. So we don't use the incoming water. The ice tastes ok. So we figure it has to be something in the thru the door water reservoir.
 
We've used this water to water the dogs with, they don't seem to object. I would guess a few thousand gallons of water has passed through the machine by now. We have a friend who has a very similar GE refrigerator about 7 years old and the through the door water has a funny taste to it too. Not like burning plastic, but something else that is strange.

We do have a "plug" we can use to bypass using the GE filter. Next filter change I'll use that and see if the taste changes any.
