*SIGH*

What to do?

My Genie brand "Chain-Glide" garage door opener still opens the door with ever little power glitch and surge

It's embarassing already!

(BTW, if you look closely you can see my retractable clothesline in the side yard/garden!)

...it still goes UP on its own...

And that is a problem?
To have such problems, some people don't know what they have 'till it's gone - wait a minute, you mean not, er, right, yeah, ok got it.
I would suggest you check the power line for "dirt". If there is anything else on that circuit which is spiking or putting stuff back into the line, that could explain it.
If you can, maybe a power line cleaner wouldn't be a bad idea - at least to try out. A non-interruptible power which filters ain't exactly cheap, so maybe you could borrow one and see.
Other thought - could you make the antenna more directional - so it only sees the very strong signal of you pulling in?

If I had thougth about it, I would have had a second conduit run for low voltage aplications when the trench was dug to rewire the garage.

Telephone
cable tv
Garage door activator
open/close indicator.

etc.

Toggles,

Thank you Thank You Thank You!!!! All this time I thought my mind was going....I have gotten up in the morning only to find the garage door open. The neighbor has stopped coming home from work and put the door down for me..all of which I slept through.

Now that you bring this subject up...my memory reminds me that, each time we did have a slight power outage. There were problems with a transformer in our neighborhood that is now fixed.

You just made my day...of course my partner is not going to buy this story, he still thinks I just forgot to put it down...but at least I know better.

Morgan

We had all kinds of outages - from seconds to days in our neighborhood a few years back. I never had the garage door issues you're having, but lost a couple of electronic things, three refrigerator/freezers full of food, etc. Since we have public utilities in Nebraska, I contacted my elected power company board representative and rattled a few cages at the company itself and lo and behold, they actually called me back and informed me they were making upgrades to the grid in my area and updating the switching and transformers from the 1940's equipment we had previously. Since then, not one outage - not even in severe storms.

Call and complain - if you and your neighbors make enough noise, they may just fix the problems.

Oh No,

You are so sissy.

Automatic door openers.

And a Ho' also.

Oh Gawd,...Save this po' young man. Help him to see the error of his ways.

His most likely smokes (something), drinks, and knowwwwnnnnssss himself.

And pass me that bottle there...I could use another drink of that there moonshine.

Dear God,...keep him in your eye, to watch over him as he smokes, drinks and ...knows...himself.

I have said my southern prayer over you, Dear Toggle, so go forth, and be healed! Praise God!

Had a Stanley for years in the old place,, never had that problem. Moms Craftsman never has the problem. Maybe it's a glitch with the Genie brand. You near the airport or something

it goes up on its own....

My Dear Toggles:

Are you sure a low flying plane isn't activating the garage door opener? After all, a garage door opener is quite a "bewitching" machine....hehe....

~Are you sure a low flying plane isn't activating the garage door opener.

It's possible in that one of the large steet by my home is what pilots use (fly over) to get to the John F.Kennedy Internatinal Airport.

But I finally figures out it happens during spikes/surges/outages/"Blinks" in the power.

Greg Oldhouseman:

I must say I do have to take issue with your post. If it is intended as a joke a *LOL* would be a great clue for all of us!

There is no need for name-calling, judgments or to bring God into this.

If you were offended by my thougths and sense of humor (which were not aimed at you directly or even indirectly) in another thread you did receive an apology.

Here's more humor. *LOL*
Play nice in the sandbox or daddy will remove it.

Steve, I have two thoughts for you (I had three, but other people already talked about that, lol).

First, and most common, someone else in the neighborhood also has a similar opener using a similar frequency to yours, so when they operate their door, yours follows in duet. They are probably wondering why *their* door is doing ghostly things when you operate yours and maybe if you drive around the neighborhood with you clicker you'll find out where/who. Changing your frequency/code/whatever is probably the easiest cure.

Second, maybe one or more of the safety devices (infrared, touch sensors etc) that are supposed to sense when the door touches a kid/car and/or there's some obstruction in the door path are misbehaving and thinking the door hit something thus retracting it to the open position. Sometimes the sensors are misaligned, sometimes there's a torque sensor that makes the door open if it thinks it's putting too much force in closing the door -- it all depends on the door and mechanism and I've never had an automatic garage door myself, but friends and family have had similar annoyances. Sometimes you do have to call a representative from the company that has the door opener under warranty.

Good luck and I hope that it's easy to make improvements and fix it!

As I understand it, newer openers may have more advanced remote controls, which, like newer cordless phones, give unique codes that are not easily duplicated.

I have read of thieves exploiting the ability to open older, unsecured garage doors to gain access to homes for purposes of burglary. So it might be a good idea to upgrade the opener for that reason alone. It's probably a good idea to have a locked door between an attached garage and the rest of the home.

Thanks guys.

Mine is newer and has "intellicode" which changes the frequency with each use of the remote control.

My gagarge is detached, so access to the house would be by tunnel (so why bother, LOL) and the water-table here is quite high. They may drown first if they don't die of exhaustion.

It's definitely closing all the way, unobstructed. I check for tht now every time.

The events that trigger an "open sesame" appear to be quick dips followed by rapid increases in voltage or those micro-outages where you can count to three and the power is back. Does not appear to be longer intervals of black-outs.

~If there is anything else on that circuit.

The garage is a separate circuit with only one "other" outddor receptacle on the side of the house that is not generally used.

Steve Dear

That's from a comedy radio show from the late '70's, early 80"s I heard when I was in the army. There was a Dr. *forget his name* traveling medicine show that put on a fake southern accent and prayed while making overt references. Lift the door yourself (be a man part) and don't depend on a machine to do it for you. No offence intended, I thought you of all people would have heard that comedy show before. I will find the exact routine for you to listen to.

In my neighborhood an open sandbox meant that the cats in the neighborhood used it. Not something that you want to be playing in.... 5 dollars huh to make ya hollar...wow Toggles you are cheap..with the gas prices the way they are thats like a gallon and a half of gas...hmm gas ...hollar...I am torn.Oh so torn. Its hard for a girl to make a living on her back these days...and at my age I am just glad I can get back up off my knees...just sayin..lol.

Now where are my red sweat-pants?

LOL. So we are all sisters again? MAHVELOUS!

oh Greg how the F*** do I know who has potentially fallen off their meds routine? LOL

My apologies, I'm a bit stressed out. I didn't THINK that was you speaking. I'm sorry. My nipples are all sore, and I'm cranky and..... OMG Aunt-flo is here again.

I have company.

BYE!

Look in the owners manual for your opener and see if there is a way to change the code on your opener. On some units it's a set of DIP switches on the opener and the remote.
You could also put a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) unit on the line to the opener. That would definitely stop the voltage fluctuations. You can find some cheap ones for under $100.

Toggle, my apologies to anyone who may have mentioned this already, and I'm not real hip to these devices, but it is possible it's a fail-safe of some sort, so, in the event of a blackout, you could ESCAPE your garage?

If there's an emergency switch or something, forget I even brought it up.

I was just thinking, I've been in a lot of houses lately, where the garage is attached to the house, but there is no connecting door.

Garage...

Long ago, I think some garage door openers operated with remote controls which operated on a UHF frequency. This particular frequency was close to a frequency used by airplane pilots (I don't know if it was military or regular) but near airports, some garage door openers would activate from overlapping frequencies.

Additionally, could there be a short of some sort in the opener's receiver that would cause it to activate on an much weaker "signal" than normal? Also, does this happen only when you're home, or also when you're away? If it's only when you're home, it may be a faulty clicker in your car.

Good luck,
Dave
