Today I went shopping at one of those chain thrift stores. Wondering what I'd find. Went back to the small appliances department, filled with the usual crap when my eyes fell upon a vision. There on the top shelf, in gleaming chrome was a vintage broiler/rotisserie oven. And not just any oven, but a 1954 Black Angus King Size oven. It was impossibly shiny, I looked inside, the manual and cookbook were still there, along with all the wrapped accessories. Can't be, this thing is brand NEW, the power cord still wrapped up as it came from the factory.  $29.99, my jaw dropped.  Yes, the Caloric has a rotisserie as well, but well this was SPECIAL.  I was giddy.

So I placed it on top of the cart. It was far too big to fit in the cart. So as I slowly wheeled towards check out, the front left wheel hits something and locks. Then I saw, in utter horror, as the oven slid off the cart, and crashed onto the floor. The glass door shattering into thousands of pieces. The control panel crushed, the sides bent inwards. Time had stopped. It had survived for over 60 years just for me to destroy it.

I was so upset, so heartbroken I had to leave the store. My poor husband, God bless him, did his best to console me. "We'll  find another one, you'll see." Maybe, but new?

Feeling better, I know this sounds silly and all, but you should had seen it, that perfect mirror finish, those pastel colored push buttons. Sigh.

This is NOT the actual oven, images pulled from the net.

The Message Is Clear

Louie, someone is trying to tell you that the only rotisserie you need is the Caloric's, and that you'll find the right spit for it one of these days, and the whole thing will be much cheaper to operate.

If it's any consolation, that Blank Angus looks very much like a more substantial and decked out Roto-Broil in its design, but it might have been produced by a different manufacturer.  Still, the system looks much the same and judging from the damage incurred, the build quality wasn't any better than RB's.

I used to love my Roto-Broil until I got my hands on a '60s vintage GE Rotisserie Oven.  It's bigger, it's much better built, the spit rotates faster -- like a professional one, and clean-up is a breeze because there's virtually no spattering.  I never use the Roto-Broil anymore.

It's a shame what happened, but like you said, it wasn't meant to be.  Something else is.

Don't beat yourself up.  Things sometimes go wrong.  I lost the top to a Westinghouse Laundromat  a few years ago Labor Day.   Over the years many have posted about "finds" that have fallen out of trucks and a zillion other mishaps.  Accidents happen.

What a horrible thing, Louie. Don't ever trust carts if the item doesn't fit down inside the cart and protected. Little good that does you now but just saying. I always carry items that don't fit in carts or find another way to move them. You never know when something on the floor jams a wheel or a wheel just malfunctions or someone or something can ram the cart. Trolley to our English friends.

OMG

I'm so sorry to hear that! My heart sank reading this. I think it's safe to say, something like that happening is one of the worst nightmares of everyone here.

That had to be stressful ... but, there may another one in the next thrift shop  and it will be an even better one.

Was it a

You break you buy deal too? That would have made it pretty rough as well.
Don't feel too bad. Im sure someone has loaded up a vintage washer or dryer, and had it tip over in the truck. (Not me) but someone !

Poor Louie, keep your chin up.....

it hasn't come to surface yet, but there is always some good in everything, and everything has a reason...and some things, we will never understand....

Thanks guys

Luckily, the staff saw what had happened and said not to worry, so no, I did not have to pay for it. But get this, I went back the other day, it was back on sale! And for the same price!

On a happier note, I found a nice Farberwear electric frying pan Mod 310-A yesterday for just 7 bucks.
