I've just had the pleasure of picking up those sweet coopertone GE double ovens we've all been talking about for Roger. They look quite beautious. They are all safe and snuggly wrapped in quilts and blankets ready to go to New York next weekend to switch with "Beulah", the big pink stove of my dreams.

Kinda fun how this is all working out here in our little vintage appliance corner of the world. We will have to post pictures of the exchange. :)

Speaking as one who has participated in a couple of appliance "relays" I can honestly say it's a rewarding feeling knowing that a great appliance is going to a loving home.  And, the satisfaction in knowing that another beauty has been saved from a fate worse than death is gratifying too.

We just got back from Vermont and I can't wait

to actually see it! This wouldn't have happened without Lisa, and beyond our huge appreciation for that, we're equally happy that she and her family will have their future cooking adventures with Beulah! This beauteous JK-29 will be the center of the kitchen in our upcoming retirement home, and I can smell the goodies baking already!

And additional thanks go to all here whose advice on wall ovens in general were critical to making the final decision to get this one!

Roger:

"JK-29 ca. 1968 (?)"

Of course, you'll be able to date this beauty exactly once you have a serial number, but I can tell you it's either late '60s (from '67 to '70) or very early '70s.

The giveaway is the oven door handles. The ones on your oven have brushed metal inserts. GE later changed the inserts to Ye Olde Fayke Woode Graine.

So, she's early.

am perfectly glad to do without...

that "Ye Olds Fayke Woode Graine" LOL!

Kind of reminds one of those wacky and wonderful mid-70s NYer Broughams, LTDs and Electra 225s with their ersatz fake Edwardian crests, "Opera" windows, Velour seats, Rolls knock-off grilles and acres of Plastique Woode Graine... veritable rolling Kitsch Wagens, Livin' High on the Hog the 'Murican way!

GEs like these seemed to keep a very decent level of quality well up into the '70s, but the mid to later '80s GE and Hotpoint ranges we've had were kind of getting on towards cheezy, cost cutting resulting in stuff like thinner steel, flimsy backsplashes covered by black vinyl covering and bottom drawers that don't glide in smoothly.

Hmmmm, so I wonder...

who made the approx mid '80s Hotpoint 30" lower-to-MOL self cleaning range at my son's house, or the similar year and almost identical looking and feature-wise GE at daughter's. I had no idea WCI made anything for GE. Both of them have the aforementioned black plastic film (3M made?) covered cheap-o looking backsplash with printed on graphics, but, that said, it must be admitted that both perform their intended jobs very well, nigh-on for 30 years at this point.

chuckle...

"Ye Olde Fayke Woode Graine". That made my night. That is one flavor of "vintage" I have never caught a taste for. Nope, these ovens have none of that. They are really classy and, I must say, that picture doesn't do them justice. They are splendid. The outside looks like it came right out of the box. Really well taken care of by Mrs. Mid Century Housewife. The Mrs. "Firedome" is going to love them.

It never ceases to amaze me, the details that you all know about the appliances here. I mean, dates, manufacturers, model #'s, paint colors, cabinet styles, control panel layouts, graphic display details... the list goes on. I have said it before, I'll say it again, someone here should compile the knowledge and publish a book about vintage appliances. Maybe have the Hobart Kitchenaid guy do one chapter about those dishwashers. Someone else do GE ranges, Someone else do Maytag automatics, someone else wringers.

Thanks all!

These will be used daily in our VT place when we move back. Eye level ovens were desired for convenience, so it came down to between double wall ovens OR a 2 oven Flair, and the wall ovens w/ a cooktop can be put in a smaller space. Well these popped up and Lisa spotted them and made it happen! So now the search is on for the right cooktop, probably in Coppertone or Stainless. What would be a dream set is a 4 burner electric and a separate 2 burner gas... did anyone make one (2 burner gas) during the vintage days? There's plenty of new ones.

Roger:

It would be very HTF, but GE made an option that would suit your needs well.

It was the JV 66 vent hood, which contained controls for - wait for it, wait for it! - a Sensi-Temp burner on the matching JP 86L cooktop. The cooktop looked exactly like any other GE cooktop with the controls on the vent hood, except for the Sensi-Temp sensor in the middle of the right front burner.

Anyway, this would give you the flexibility you are looking for from gas, but also give you the cleanliness of electric.

Roger, didn't Caloric make gas cook tops that were often mated in two sets of two burners, but which you could choose to install just the two if that is what you want?

Sandy, here's a sensi-temp range control that sold on craigslist a year or so ago, it was new never installed (wow!) and sold very quickly (I wish to me, but alas, not).

Roger:

Ah, then you're aware of the Sensi-Temp cooktop and matching hood!

As great a deal as that one was, the Avocado is, shall we say, un-pretty. Hopefully one of these beauties will surface in Coppertone or Brushed Chrome.

I hugely appreciate those photos, which have now been copied to my hard drive. The GE catalog shot was pretty bad, and I could never see details. Thanks!

that hood would be IDEAL...

especially in Coppertone. We have a Copper anodized now painted vintage Broan that will work, but that one with SensiTemp controls & the matching cooktop would be topping! My folks had the MOL avocado cooktop with the regular GE hood and wall mounted push buttons in a separate plinth along with the JK-29.

Did the aforementioned Caloric modular set up have provision for 2 electric and 2 gas burners to be installed simultaneously? Or was the choice 2 or 4 gas units, (I presume there'd be some kind of work space wood or metal insert when using only 2?) which would consume more space than necessary if one were to need only the 2 gas burners. I like to saute on gas.

Oh... and btw... re: "Mrs. Firedome" loving them....

she never touches anything in the kitchen when I'm around, if I can help it! I'm the chief (and only!) cook and bottle washer around here, having learned to cook out of self-defense around 1971! She does like to bake some cookies at Christmas time, however, and should find the new JKs more than satisifactory for that!
