John Lewis JLWD1612 washer dryer

Hi all,

So after 4 years of frustration at poorly rinsed clothes in our AEG L14850 washer dryer, we are upgrading to a John Lewis JLWD1612. This also has the steam refresh/anti crease on it, a larger drum, and a fluff clean cycle.

It's arriving next Thursday!

This is obviously a re-badged AEG machine, but I can't work out if it has the Jet system or not. It has the rubber "bit" at the top of the door seal, like the newer AEG Protex machines, but I can't work out whether the Jet is actually there or not.

Does anyone on here have experience of this machine and know if it has the Jet? Also any comments from owners of this machine generally would be welcome as there's not much info about it on the web.

Can't help specifically..

However, reviewed.com did a test on a John Lewis washing machine and it performed excellently..

They did a test on a few machines, and they were testing the washing capability of the machine, to make it fair all loads were done in a branded non bio - they wanted to see how the machine itself washed stains etc, not factoring in detergent differences etc.

However, one sweeping theme across the net on JL machines, is that they are not quick machines at all, the comments come up about the length of the wash times.

However, of course it being JL, you should be very satisfied and have no problems at all.

I would go for one of these if I were machine shopping.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not too bothered by the long wash times - the AEGs are very similar if not the same as the JL machines, so I'm used to it. The 'quick' option that can be applied to all the normal cycles works very well for lightly soiled laundry and knocks a significant amount of time off the cycle anyway so I don't find it an issue.

I'm just hoping that rinsing performance on the JLWD1612 is better than the L14850. The AEGs that the JLWD1612 is based on spin between rinses (which the L14850 does not, on the easycare cycles), so assuming the programming is the same as the AEGs, that should improve performance. Which? rates it well for that so am hoping!

I love the quietness of the L14850 when washing/rinsing - there is absolutely no motor noise and it's virtually inaudible.

The JLWD1612 is arriving on Thursday so I will update with some videos too hopefully.

They are 2 entirely different machines.

The old one is based on the pre ProTex machines. These new ProTex machines have longer interim spins, bigger drums and some other, more technical differences like a slightly modified PCB and motor.

We have one of the smaller ProTex washers, and the pretty much only thing that bothers me is the super short option: For what ever reason, as soon as you go from short (2:20h at Cottons 60°) to super short (1:20ish), it kills of 1 rinse (2 rinses total), but cancels the spin after wash as well. That is barely enough to rinse a few TShirts, but anything else, you have to select an extra rinse.

However, with your new machine, you can get up to 8 rinses on Cottons anyways.

I'd be verry interested how the dryer part performs. These washer dryers still use plenty of water for drying (30-40 liters, I think), so I'd expect nothing but perfect drying results.

Well the JLWD1612 arrived today! Plumbed in, initial maintenance wash done.

I can report that this machine does NOT have the jet system fitted.

On the maintenance wash (cottons 95 degrees) the machine did not spin after the main wash, and did just 2 rinses with a fast spin in between. Whether this was because it detected there was no laundry in it I'm not sure - will report more when I've had a chance to use it over the next few days.

I then did a synthetics 40 wash with laundry. It was a full load, and and took 2 hours 20 mins. That is about 40 minutes longer than the L14850, but this is an 8kg machine vs. 7kg on the L14850. Most importantly the machine rinsed really well and span fairly fast between rinses! It did 3 rinses on the synthetics cycle.

It's currently on drying half the synthetics load, which has just finished and took about 1 hour - exactly the same as the L14850. The drying cycle incorporates a spin at the start which is new. And the dryer fan is SO much quieter than on the L14850.

The machine generally feels far more solid than the L14850 and doesn't vibrate or rattle at all even when slightly unbalanced spinning - a far cry from the L14850. The drum is massive! So far I'm very happy - but will report back in a few days.
