...Well, it's official. Courtesy (and I do mean courtesy) of Ben (swestoyz) and Cory (cadman), I am the proud new owner of a matched pair of 806 'Tags. Ben brought 'em over today (sorry about the stairs and the handrail, Ben!).

There are, of course, issues. The washer's cabinet is going to have some paint touch-up due to some minor rust. Both washer and dryer are the dread Almond, which can be corrected with new white cabinets in due course. And there's plenty of cleaning and detailling to do, naturally.

I'll try to get some pics of them in their "au naturel" condition in the next few days, so that the transformation can be seen as I make progress.

Many, many thanks to Ben and Cory - it's great to be a Maytag owner again.

Does Anyone Know:

How to get a stuck lint filter off the agitator? This one is stuck and I do by-grannies mean stuck. I don't want to try prying, since that will cause nicks to the agitator. I already figure I'm in for the usual horrific job of cleaning the lint filter of umpteen years' worth of impacted lint, but I can't do that until I get the darn thing off!

Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

How to get a stuck lint filter off the agitator?

Crank up the water heater temp and fill the tub up with HOT water to the point there it's even with the top of the agitator and the bottom of the lint filter (firmly push and hold the "Large" button until the water reaches that point). Let it sit for an hour or so, then start abusively turning the lint filter clockwise/counterclockwise. I have had some powerfin lint filters really put up a fight! I bet they were never removed or cleaned in 35+ years.

Sadly, I have learned that stuck lint filters and removal of agitators without total destruction usually go hand in hand.

Got It Off!

I do believe the photo shows why I had so much trouble. Not only is there hugely impacted lint, there seems to be a lot of detergent residue, and a lot of mineral buildup. Here in this part of Iowa, the water has a lot of calcium and magnesium in it.

I got it off my gently and repeatedly hitting the filter collar with the palm of my hand, striking each side in turn to distribute the force. Eventually, I could feel just a bit of give, and that's when I grabbed the filter and began to apply rotational force. After a few minutes spent grunting and heaving and giving the dirtiest parts of my vocabulary a workout, I got it loose.

Now to clean the damn thing up! That'll be a challenge, eh?

Congrats!

Score, Sandy. I can't put my finger on why those center dial tags are so appealing, but they do catch my eye. While I agree that white is the preferred color, your almond set is purdy!

Getting settled in, I see. We have the long winter nights coming; I'm planning to embark on the Westy set any day now.

Toodles!

P.S. Ebay has become my intimate friend and boxes of Guardian service are arriving regularly. I am afraid I'm a hopeless case.

William:

I know what you're going through; I remember when I was putting my Farberware collection together. eBay was my bestest friend.

BTW, Charbee sent me this ad shot of something you'll recognise:

understatement!

Drool over, more like. Why are strains of "Buy your car at Crazy Eddie's" trilling in my head?

Oh, BTW, have you seen the biography of Linda Darnell? It was hiding out on my DVD copy of LTTW. I had no idea she came to such a tragic end. My God, she was beautiful.

Sandy,

Try soaking that filter in a solution of C.L.R., you should be able to find it at any grocery, hardware, or discount retailer. Let me know if this works for you, it did for me.

Car wash

I have had some good luck taking filthy parts to the local self serve car wash and giving them a good hosing down for a couple dollars.

Might work for you.
