Hi, my name is Stephen and I just joined!

What got me here? Well, for the past 10 years I rented an apartment which was built sometime in the late 60s to early 70s, and I fell in love with the little General Electric range/oven it had, as well as mid-century things in general. So, I'm in the process of buying this house built in 1957, and I want to try to bring it back to the original feel of the 60s as much as I can in a practical way.

It has a fairly new looking GE gas range, but I kind of like it, so that will probably stay.

The wall oven is a fairly old gas Maytag unit, probably from the 80s. It has some chrome, but also a digital clock, and it only works on broil. I really wanted an electric GE wall oven, so I found a JK-25 and bought it for $200! We'll see if there's already wiring for it or not.

Then I have to find a refrigerator. I did some priliminary research on here and saw some things about various GE TBF models, so I guess I'll look for that.

I also saw a mention of a Maytag 906 being like the most awesome washer/dryer of all time, so I guess I should try to find one of those too! The house doesn't have a dishwasher, but thats fine with me.

Anyway, if someone knows what the range below is, like the model and what not, I'd like to know just so that I know what I used to have in my apartment. Mine was white instead of yellow, and the door handle was blank instead of saying "General Electric" with the logo in the middle like this one has. This one is listed on CL in Chico.

Thanks!

- Stephen

that stove is along the lines of a P7 lineup......

decent stoves actually......had one with the pushbutton controls along the backsplash, and if I recall a window for the oven.....

one thing I loved, and missed since I left it go with the house was the rotisserie.....greatest invention in the world...

if I had to go back to a vintage stove, I would want that rotisserie and a deep well cooker.....most people don't know the value of simple "cant do without" accessories....

another feature missed on current electric stoves is the electric outlet.....

Welcome!

That yellow drop-in is a Mark 27.  Pushbutton controls and a convenience outlet date it as pre-1976, however, yellow color dates it even earlier - like pre-1968.  No self-cleaning oven, and no window in the door, but otherwise a great range.

Welcome to AW.org!

>Maytag 906 sets are pretty rare. An 806 set is much easier to find and every bit as capable. They light up too!

Past rarity, they have one issue I don't like: how rigidly programmed they are. You get exactly what Maytag decided each cycle should have, no more, no less. I like the ability to modify/control things. I'm a bit of a control freak in the laundry room. A better choice would be a mid/late 60s-early 70s Lady Kenmore, which at least gave the ability to customize things. Or go to the Maytag 806 as suggested.

For that matter, I was quite happy years back with a Kenmore that was a low end machine. It was just high enough in the line new to have water level selection, and a delicate speed. It lacked a lot of features...but the important stuff was there.

Alright! So I've been in my house for a few months now fixing this and that, and I still haven't installed my GE JK25, but I looked at what would be involved yesterday, and now I'm starting to wonder if maybe I shouldn't just fix what I have, or get a new gas oven.

1. Current oven is gas and measures 24" inches at the face.
2. It's a Maytag CWG302, looks pretty clean, but the igniters need to be replaced.
3. The JK25 is 26" at the face, and though the rest of it is 24.5" wide, it's gonna be a really tight fit inside the cabinet. At 26" for the doors, it will barely clear a moulding on the adjacent wall, not to mention the height difference between the "single with broiler" vs full double, which would require lots of cabinet modification.
4. I can't get the self clean latch to close, and I don't even know for sure if the JK25 works.
5. I'd have to run 50' of wire through the attic and put in a new breaker.
6. My gas bill has only been about $7 a month, vs $120 for my most recent electric bill. Granted it's summer, but I have an old hot water heater running on the gas and have been cooking on my gas stove top pretty regularly.

Any suggestions? Looks like GE makes replacement 24" gas ovens that would fit right in my current space for $1500 or so. Maybe I could get one and modify the way it looks using parts off the JK25?

Fix the Tag

I;d fix the maytag, sell the other and move on.. Trying to retro fit ovens is a Pain in the BUTT... I've gone through it in a couple houses and it always seems you have to saw a little here and there and everywhere and its a pain.. Plus trying to wire up a new oven and such... And risk it not working

The newer ovens suck and being so few gas ovens on the market makes it less appealing...

The ignitor is for sale on line from $50 to $70 bucks... The maytag is a decent oven...

Spend the money (if you havent already) and get a good fridge... Theres a retro looking GE (link Below) that is adecent fridge and will give you the feel you want...

Thats my 2 cents
