Just Picked Up - 2000 Whirlpool Direct Drive

I was just given this machine by one of my friends who was getting rid of it, so I thought I'd post about it. It's about a MOL Whirlpool direct drive with the Xtra roll dual action agitator. Though I believe it is only a 1 speed unit, but I am not entirely sure about that since I haven't plugged it in and tested it out yet. I have confirmed that it does need new agitator dogs, I'm hoping to get that fixed here over the weekend before I actually go and test it out. The previous owner said that it has a problem in the spin cycle, not exactly certain what source of it could be, but he did say that sometimes the clothes come out wet after the spin cycle is done, and sometimes they come out dry, but with "lint" on them. But other than that and the dogs, it seems to be in decent shape for free, so I think I made out well on that one.

Now it is a little bit more low end of a machine than I would have wanted, (would have preferred at least a warm rinse option and a second speed) but regardless, it's a direct drive, so I can't complain. Actually the warm rinse upgrade is a very easy job, and I do plan to accomplish that here sometime once I figure out what to actually do with the machine, but for now it's just sitting in the shed out of the way. Hi Steven, It is a one speed motor model. The numerals in the model 5133, mean 5 Cycle, 1 Speed, 3 Temperatures, 3 Water Levels.

 

It is a good basic model, It could have oil in the clutch if it is not spinning well.

 

I hope you have solar heated water if you are wasting all that hot water rinsing clothing.

I'd hang on to that DD, spend a bit and go ahead and replace the coupler, clutch, pump, and agitator dogs, and use it! They don't make them like that anymore. I'm currently looking for a 2nd direct drive to put into my climate controlled storage unit just because I can NOT stand these new "HE" top loaders. I would love to have the ability to use a front loader, but I have a fluid filled cyst INSIDE my spinal cord that is not operable, so I have to avoid bending down unless absolutely necessary.

Conclusion: Salvage it and put it to good use!

Cosmetically it appears to be in good shape for being 19 years old. It was taken care of due to the lack of rust present inside the lid and lid well. Looks like it just needs a cleaning to look pretty good again. Congratulations.

This is very similar to my other half's Estate washer from 2011 or so.  The gentle cycle is periods of agitation and soaking for both the wash and rinse portions.

Ok so I decided that I would plug the machine in and test it out briefly to make sure the motor functions end everything worked. In conclusion of that, everything works fine except for a couple of things.
1. There is a very odd rubbing sound when it's running, and it sounds like it's coming from the drain pump. And when running, I barely even hear the air swooshing in the pump at all, almost as if it's clogged or something.
2. The brakes seem a little weak when it stops spinning, but then when I turn the tub by hand a few times, it starts getting stiffer to move, so I'm wondering if perhaps there's just something that's not catching when it stops? I don't know, but in any case, I'll have it out in the shop on Monday to try do a totally in-depth look at everything and cleanup. Will post about it when I do.
