it's a KDS15 (Superba). This was the very first of the 4-way hydrosweet botom spray arm.

I have a KDS 55 the portable version.
As it has been established that it is a single arm machine.
I use mine for partial loads or when I have company, just for Plates and Glasses.
I find it good cleaning, but I don't care for the Single Arm System. I love the machine for nostalgia but racking is a pain. You can't load Big pots and Pans in the Bottom with the expectations of getting items in the top rack clean.
Save it ? Absolutely. But always remember... It's a DISH washer. I was always envious of my neighbors that had a KitchenAid. When I started collecting them, I was horribly disppointed with the results. The KDS 18 and up with dual wash arms are Superior cleaning machines.

You discovered and described exactly what it is. Your discovery didn't occur to you until adulthood. I figured it out at age 12. You're right it's a DISH washer. I enjoy plaing with them at wash-ins cuz there's pretty much nuttin but glasses, dishes and maybe some other stuff that fits. but I couldn't see having one of th3ese as a daily driver. I'd be washing too many things by hand--pots, pans, mixing bowls. But you're right, it needs to be saved. And funny thing, EVERY household I knew that had a KA17 or lower (one wash-arm wonders) ONLY put dishes in their machines in suberbia. I never once saw a pot, pan, mixing bowl, and the like. I'd just go on back home and put everything that would fit in the 1968 Waste King or the RotoRack. Nuf Said!!

SINGLE WASH ARM KA DWs
I think my all time favorite KA DW is the KDS-16, I installed one in my mountain house in the service area off the formal dinning area. And it is a good machine in this area as I don't try to wash any thing but dishes in it. The main kitchen has the same model 1987 WP Power CLean machine I have at home. On the KDS-16 I added a relay to the motor circuit that energizes the 2nd heater element whenever the other element is on, this way it heats at 1400 watts when washing. And it really makes a big difference in the wash water temperature, it does require a 20 amp circuit however, but most DWs are on one anyway. This change is easy to make on any KD-15 through KD-21 that has the dual heating element.

Looks like a very nice dishwasher. These are good tough machines.
A question for John. I have noticed with these models the issue that I have come across is the detergent cups not working, and leaking. These have the solenoid type release openers. Can you use anything else besides the solenoid type of release for the detergent cups?
I have not heard of anyone talk about easy fixes for this.

KA 15-16 DETERGENT DISPENSERS
Both of these use the same DD although there were two different designs that were both interchangeable. I just try to find good used ones as they did have problems with this design. I have never tried to fix one of these maybe Stevet has some good ideas about fixing these?.

We were a GE BowTie House.
My Mom was the first woman to have a Dishwasher on our block in 1961. We actually used to put Pots and Pans after all the dishes and glasses were loaded. Ours had a Power Shower and ya know ??? That machine cleaned pretty well.
We bought a Whirlpool in 1970,one of the TOL with the 2 spray arms. Jeez, that machine cleaned Super. One of the options was "Super Wash". That was the same year I bought my Mom a KitchenAid Superba Disposal. With the "Magna Start" activator sink switch. Mom passes about a year later and my Grandmother had it taken out and threw it in the Trash !!! She said "We didn't need that thing". I hated her after that for years.

i don't blame you!
my mom passed away in 67 when i was 12 and if i had bought her something like that and then had it taken out by a relative i would have been livid!
i put my first disposal in for my aunt mary who was raising me in 1971. an in sink erator. also bought her a g.e. front loader dishwasher of the same era as i could not afford a kitchenaid. luckily both of these lasted in that house till it was sold in 89.
ah the warm memories!!

and i would love that
kds-15. have 2 15 models but both are imperials. would love a superba! but too far away for me (i think).

Single-arm KitchenAid kitchens always need two dishwashers
The KDS-15 works best in tandem with a Frigidaire spin-tube to handle pots and pans in the top rack. Flat dishes that hit against the rack of the spin-tube go in the KitchenAid. Voila!
