KDP-18 leaking after bearing change

Hello all, I'm new here so I don't even know if anyone still uses this site. All the posts look about 10 years old, so I'm hopeful someone can help me find what I need to fix my Kitchenaid Patrician dishwasher.

We've been using it for many years and it's been working great until recently. The Hobart motor started making a lot of bearing noise and it stopped cleaning well. I pulled it apart and changed out the bearings. I reused the seals, hoping they would be fine, but when I cranked it up and the water started flowing, it started spraying water out above the motor underneath. I think I put it back together with the impeller seal upside down, so I went back in and flipped over the seal. I was feeling pretty proud of myself for figuring out my mistake until it leaked the exact same as before.

Now I'm wondering if I missed an o-ring or something. The seal seems pliable and slides over the shaft nicely. Now, one of the ears on the discharge impeller has almost completely broken off. Is there a secret hidey hole for new old stock parts for these?

Shaft Seal

Hi, typically when disassembling the pump and motor the way you have described the shaft seals need to be replaced with new ones. On a machine this old those seals are probably long worn out by now, which is why your bearings rusted in the first place. You cannot reuse the old seals even if you turn them upside down no matter how pliable they look. Besides the seals, there is an O-ring that fits inside the top of the drain impeller.

You can find the shaft seal kits on eBay relatively easy. The part number is 4162139 (This is a whirlpool part number since they now own KitchenAid). There is also a set of shim washers (included in the kit) that need to be used with the new impeller, but the number of them that you use will probably vary from what you originally had due to slight differences when manufactured. There is a service manual on this site that you can download that will fully illustrate how to complete the installation correctly.

Once the seal fails, it's done and not reusable. You'll take out the motor bearings again using it that way.
