Just thought some of you would like to see that I finally swapped my almond KDS-19 for the coppertone 18 I'd bought at least a year before. (It's probably some kind of brown color, but it's close enough to my Aztec Copper Frigidaires that no one notices.) Funny enough, what prompted the swap was nothing remotely related to dishwashers, but rather my construction of a second-floor addition.

The second floor will have a separate HVAC system that will locate above the stairwell. In order to get rid of condensate water from the a-coil, I'd have to use a pump to get it up and over the vaulted ceilings. I hate these pumps... They are unreliable, and when they fail it's a disaster. Then it dawned on me that the stairwell is a common wall on both levels and into the basement. Why not just run a hose through the wall and let gravity do its thing into the sump drain?

Of course this meant I'd have to remove the DW to drill a hole through the basement wall top-plate, and I'm sure not going to reinstall the "wrong" DW over again! (The condensate line passes through this wall into the basement) You'll recall I built an 8-inch "box" to elevate the DW. The first photo shows that.

Try not to judge the temporary stick-on floor I installed, nor the unfinished trim around the perimeter of the floor. All the floors will be done after the 2nd floor is done because I don't want to subject newly finished hardwood and tile to inevitable damage from construction.

One thing that held me back from installing the 18 when I first got it was the obvious blown-out gasket. I red-circled the marks they left in the lime-stains of the pump. Lime residue and pump gasket aside, just about everything in this 18 was in better shape than my well-used 19. I borrowed the gasket from the 19 for a quick and dirty repair, then soaked the rest of the pump in vinegar which cleaned it up nicely.

The end result is that the 18 is up and running and we aren't noticing any real difference in performance (about two weeks now). In fact the only difference is the compliments we get on (finally) having all the old appliances match! If somebody has an extra pushbutton for the 18, I'd like to buy it because the worn chrome on the "regular wash" button is the only real cosmetic flaw.

When I saw your kitchen, I thought only briefly, "only the DW doesn't match". Congrats on getting that installed and working as expected. How is your upstairs coming along - drywall in? It was a reminder of the two homes we built, seeing all the construction there. We had as much fun building as we did living in it, but seeing that you live in the construction area, the romance we enjoyed doesn't fit your experiences. Yep, the kitchen is now even greater looking, Chris.

Hope to see some future finished photos of that addition with the HVAC, etc. and best wishes for the other addition to your family.

Phil

Sorry, didn't see these replies until today.

@jkbff, I thought the doors might swap myself, but then realized they would not. (Neither has removable panels.) Turned out the 18 was in much better mechanical shape anyway.

@TL55, will send an email.

@phil, Progress continues on the addition. Just got my rough electrical, plumbing and HVAC inspection approvals so I will begin insulating today. No drywall yet, but here's a shot of the HVAC installed. 40,000 BTU 92% efficiency. Purchased it online, delivered to my door, $679 + about $200 for the A-coil. I ran the gas/electric and mounted it... Had a "craigslist guy" come over and build the plenum/ducts. Will run the refrigeration lines soon, no condenser yet. Thanks for the kind words on the baby, she and mother are doing well... I included a picture of baby's first trip to Home Depot, buying the gas lines! Picked up a new project car... 40k original miles, original paint, new tires. Drove home from Ohio, couldn't pass up for $1700! I'm going to drive it on (non-salted) winter days just to make the anti-old car crowd angry.

Chris - Nice HVAC install and

I remember the designated install area. That should keep the noise out of the bedroom. Our one house had an HVAC unit that was above our master, on the fourth(or third if not counting the basment)floor. I'd never locate any HVAC unit like that over our heads, but we didn't really have a say.

So 40K BTU for about 1350 ft2 max...I think that's about what your upstairs measure in total ft2, or under that? I forgot. Anyways, that was a deal on the price, as I'd expect at least $1500-2,000 for an HVAC system. ?

The weather has been kind up there, but my sister said there was a dusting of snow today, New Year's Day 2016.

It's good to see your wife had the baby and is healthy. Very happy for you all...take care and we'll look for more progress shots.

Phil

HNY!

I have an American Standard mounted in the attic on the 3rd floor of my house. Something that maybe there on yours but I can't see it, is a aluminum drain pan under the entire unit. It was installed on mine with a drain that goes out through the soffit outside. I thought to myself is this necessary? Oh yes it was. I have had it fill up twice and draining outside. Once was from a problem with the humidifier and another was when the area where all the drains connect, ie the burner drain, a/c coil drain and humidifier developed a leak. If you don't have one I would suggest doing this prior to closing this area up. Its a lot easier now to install than dealing with leaks later on. Looks like it coming together nicely.

Dodge Magnum XE and GT

Cool find, Chris - is it a '78 GT? They only made these for a few/couple years, 1977-79 or 78-79(not sure). $1700? You don't ask if you need this, you just get it! And you did. :-) What's the condition? Ok, this isn't a place to ask for details.

Here's a link to an ad(it has a little break in the video/audio, but still good to watch). And some photos of these beasts. Did the oil embargo kill them off(Gerald Ford's gas lines!).
