Just thought some of you would like to see that I finally swapped my almond KDS-19 for the coppertone 18 I'd bought at least a year before. (It's probably some kind of brown color, but it's close enough to my Aztec Copper Frigidaires that no one notices.) Funny enough, what prompted the swap was nothing remotely related to dishwashers, but rather my construction of a second-floor addition.
The second floor will have a separate HVAC system that will locate above the stairwell. In order to get rid of condensate water from the a-coil, I'd have to use a pump to get it up and over the vaulted ceilings. I hate these pumps... They are unreliable, and when they fail it's a disaster. Then it dawned on me that the stairwell is a common wall on both levels and into the basement. Why not just run a hose through the wall and let gravity do its thing into the sump drain?
Of course this meant I'd have to remove the DW to drill a hole through the basement wall top-plate, and I'm sure not going to reinstall the "wrong" DW over again! (The condensate line passes through this wall into the basement) You'll recall I built an 8-inch "box" to elevate the DW. The first photo shows that.
Try not to judge the temporary stick-on floor I installed, nor the unfinished trim around the perimeter of the floor. All the floors will be done after the 2nd floor is done because I don't want to subject newly finished hardwood and tile to inevitable damage from construction.
One thing that held me back from installing the 18 when I first got it was the obvious blown-out gasket. I red-circled the marks they left in the lime-stains of the pump. Lime residue and pump gasket aside, just about everything in this 18 was in better shape than my well-used 19. I borrowed the gasket from the 19 for a quick and dirty repair, then soaked the rest of the pump in vinegar which cleaned it up nicely.
The end result is that the 18 is up and running and we aren't noticing any real difference in performance (about two weeks now). In fact the only difference is the compliments we get on (finally) having all the old appliances match! If somebody has an extra pushbutton for the 18, I'd like to buy it because the worn chrome on the "regular wash" button is the only real cosmetic flaw.
