Kenmore 13114-Extended Warranty's- Are they worth it.

I want to know you folk's opinions on extended warranties.

I had our Kenmore Elite 13114 dishwasher fixed today.
You may remember me posting about the buttons falling
off after only three months. All the repairman did was
replace the front plastic panel with the buttons.
It was covered under the one year manufacturers warranty.
The cost would have been $281.62. $147 labor and $134.62
for the part.

I am inclined to avoid extended warranties.

What do you people think?

 
Joe, I hate to say this but I always tell those that ask me about extend warrranty that with these new machines it is a must. Thankfully I bought a 5 year one when I got my HE4T set which is now almost three years old. So far the washer has had about $1300 worth of work if I had to have paid for it. Down here Sears charges $159.00 just to walk in the door. With all of the electronics in todays machines an extended warranty is a must. Just my thoughts.
 
Agree here too...

I got my Neptunes at Home Depot. They only charge $99 for a 4 year extended warranty (starts after the manufacturer's warranty runs out) and I got it for the same reason, all of the electronics. I got one on the Jenn Air dishwasher when I bought it from The Maytag Store. I just think it's good insurance. I was a little worried about the Neptunes and luckily didn't get a lemon but I had heard all of the horror stories about them. It turned out to be the best machines I've ever owned. I wish I had the space to store a couple sets of them along with about 100 other sets I'd love to collect!
 
I think Sears extended warranty is a rip off (To much $$) but it will pay off if you have a numbers of service calls.

I got all my new appliance from Home Depot, and 4 years for $99. Cheaper than anyone else out there.

I haven't had to use it yet for my stuff.
 
read the fine print. they are worth every penny

home depot warranties for 99 dollars is true.. BUT.... it absolutely does not cover what sears extended warranties do..
home depot does not have their own technicians..
good luck getting your product fixed quickly...
 
It may vary by area, but my aunt needed a service call on her fridge, Sears said will be a week before a tech to come. She told them it don't cool at all, needed service right away.. Sears said sorry can't get out there any quicker. So she end up putting stuff into the barn fridge for 3 weeks.. (Took 2 weeks for the control board to come, tech didn't have any on the van, or at the shop)

What extra that Sears cover that HD don't?
 
Sears wants about $180 for a 5 year warranty.
I can still buy it anytime. This is the dishwasher
I picked out for my 86 year old mother. She is
against the extended warranty. I myself am inclined
to get it thinking it will save a lot of bucks down
the road. Would a $640 dishwasher even be worth
paying a $450 service charge if something goes wrong
after the 1 year manufacturers warranty expires?
I hardly think so. I can't convince her to get the
warranty right now. Perhaps you all can sell her
on it if you think it's needed. :-)

Well. I have been lucky. Everything in my house is Whirlpool. The appliances came with the house EXCEPT the dishwasher. I didn't like the BOL one that came with my house so I sold it to a friend (still working)......After 4.5 years, 2 things have went wrong..

1) the ice dispenser on the refridge broke so I had to purchase the entire tray....It's my own fault because when I first moved here one day I was dispensing ice and a little piece of plastic came out with the ice. I continued to use it until in finally failed.

2) the Duet control board (after one year) started flashing error codes, I had to get a new control board which now three years later continues to work. I did buy the warranty on the Duet which expires oct 2009 and if I renew it for three years its almost 300 dollars. Not sure if I'm going to do that.

All the other appliances are working great. It's such a toss up whether you should get the extended warranty or not.
