Kenmore 27841 washer (need repair help)

Washing machine basically died, and would only fill up, and do NOTHING else after it filled (wouldn't agitate, spin, or even drain).

I poked around in several areas, trying to determine the problem....After much poking, and learning as I went, I figured out the timer was the problem, and got a used timer(s) from Ebay.

After installation of (a few) different timer, the machine will now function, but is not the same as it was before; I have the same results with 3 different (replacement) timers now......Machine won't start filling till part way into the wash cycle time (around 6, instead of 14), and also won't spray rinse water during the SECOND spin (like it use to to do). It also seems to not be agitating as fast as it use to.

I was poking/pulling on some levers initially, on the underside of the washer, thinking something may have been frozen or stuck, and not sure if I changed something under there that could account for the current changes in the machines operation.

Any help on this situation would be GREATLY appreciated, so I can get this machine back to proper working condition, and keep it from getting scrapped; We use it for doing our laundry, and need a working machine.

27841 is not a full Kenmore model number.  However, a partial/match search at SearsParts finds one model 110.2781600, a direct-drive machine.

Why several timers tried?  Some were bad or didn't work?  Or wrong part numbers?  The correct timer for the machine is original part number 8578227, substitutes now to 280223.

What levers were poked/pulled? That sounds more like an old-style belt-drive model than a direct-drive, which don't much have pokable/pullable levers in the mechanism.

I'm including pics of everything I have on my machine....The only part # I can find anywhere on the machine, is the 27841 (I believe this makes it a 1977 / 80 series machine, according to what I learned from other posts on here, from Gordon).

The machine is belt driven (pic included of underside guts)

The part # for the timer is definitely 376011, as it on on the back of all the timers I have bought.....I bought 2 originally (wanted to have a spare around, in case I ever had a failure again)...The first one was exactly the same as my timer, and only filled....I then thought the timer was not the problem, but when I installed the second timer (to confirm was still the same), the machine kind of worked, but did not drain spin (was now agitating)....I then bought 2 more timers, and they did ALL functions, except what I described in my original post (does not spray during second rins/spin cycle, doesn't start operating till timer is on the 6, instead of 14, and seems to agitating slowly).

pics are included of ALL tags and/or [art #'s I could find on the machine, as well as timers, and underside guts.

The levers I pulled on (and moved a little) are "long" rectangular, in the middle/left of this pic, just to the right of the motor.

Timer

The timer you have pictured is a Mallory timer and those were terrible they all failed not only that it is remanufactured also not good.You want a 376008 which is Singer a much better timer.The other number was 378133.The replacement 378133 came with a wiring harness modification which if wasn't done the spray rinse would not work. You need a new in the box 378133 or a 376008 which should work right out of the gate.I used to change these timers all the time years ago. If it does not fill when it should the only other culprit would be water level switch but those rarely fail.

There should be a plate with a model and serial number on it, either under the lid, or on the front, down low.

110.72784120 then it may be.

That number on the feature sticker is a store/catalog reference.  It didn't come up directly in the SearsParts partial/search for being an old model.  Found it by searching the timer part number at another site which has a list of models that can take that timer.

Also tried at least one 37008 timer, and it did not work either, but just got another one here today, and will try it tonight.....

The original 376011 timer that failed in my machine, DID spray during the second rinse/spin cycle, but none of the new ones have do so.
