Kenmore 80 Shredded Door Mat Rug

Several pieces of my door mat rug were shredded in the washer. Afterwards I vacuumed the remaining debris out but during the spin cycle the washer makes a high pitch humming noise. I do not hear anything abnormal during the wash or drain cycles. Anyone have any advice on what the issue is?

Matt, I'm sorry that happened. Now you know why I never washed those types of mats and rugs on nothing but slow wash and fast spin. And why I christened DD washers Shredmores.

Is this a serious issue or can it easily be fixed?

You got some bits of the rug stuck in the water pump, it will likely work it self out in the next few loads, in the worse case you may need to replace the water pump, I would not worry about it unless it is so loud you can not stand it.

It's NOT the washer! It means that you've washed your rugs to the limit of the rug backing. The backings are glued on! The washer's spin cycle and too many times through the dryer will make the rugs loosen the backing and then they "shred" . Time for new rugs, I'm afraid!

Rubber/Latex backed rugs....

.....just do not machine wash and survive. That is why I only buy non-backed rugs and then put a non-skid "mat" under them. I have found rubber/latex backed rugs start "flaking" after the first GENTLE wash.

Thank you all. I am realized to hear this. I wonder if it would help if I drained the debris out of the drain pump. I am not sure why pieces of the rug would make a humming noise during the spin cycle.

Only some of the backing material loosened?  Or the entire rug material?

Have a photo to share of the resultant item?

Why Bits Of The Rug Cause A Humming Noise In The Spin Cycle?

Because the pump is turning during the spin cycle, and you have rug bits caught in the pump,  it also runs the opposite direction when washing so the sound may be different, how many loads have you washed since this happened ?

 

It might take a while to work itself out of the pump.

I’ve only done one full load since. No picture to share. I was able to vacuum the debris up in the washer drum. Never again. I’m just glad it will correct itself (hopefully).

Just an update: I took the drain pump out, cleaned it out by running it under some water. Put it back together and it still seems to be making the high pitch noise, but it's not as consistent as before. I'm thinking I'll just replace the entire pump. This was very easy to do.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I have replaced the pump and that fixed it. The old pump probably was original and quite nasty inside.

Hopefully you can resolve this. Almost sounds like something is in the outer tub.
We always washed 2 rugs on the slow/fast agitation/spin on the highest water level for this very reason. Front loaders are a godsend for rugs.

^ no, I checked. It was in fact the pump. The machine does not make the loud humming noise with the new pump installed.
