I know this topic has probably been covered before, but anyone have any hints to remove the agitator on this Kenmore washer, it's from 1970? How hard do I try to pull it up without breaking anything?, Won't that pull up on the agitator shaft which probably wouldn't be a good idea? I tried to pull up on it, didn't use to much force but it wouldn't move. The agitator cap was removed. I'm rebuilding this machine so I need to remove it. Any hints would help. Thanks.

Tom -

You can put a lot of force on the agitator in your efforts, in fact I have briefly picked-up machines off their feet trying to get the agitator out.

If it turns out "stucker-than-stuck" you can use an agitatmer, which employs an empty bladder like a hot water bottle, which you seat under the agitator. Once tucked under, you fill that agitamer with water from a hose, and the expansion of the bladder pushes the agitator up --- sometimes gradually, other times all of a sudden.

I'd say feel free to put some pressure on the situation, it won't hurt the machine. Just pull straight up.

Time to invest in an Agitamer...

Thanks all for your assistance. Maybe I'll host an agitator removal party and have a few of my friends try to help me lift it out. Of course I won't tell them this until they get here, they may not show up!!!!!!!

with the top in place, lid open.....lay down a few towels across the machine edges, on top of them lay down a 2x4 across the machine centered over the agitator, and with 2 racheting ties down, criss-crossed under the agitator and up around the 2x4.....and start to rachet both at the same time....this should pull the agitator off the machine.....

simplest method I have used so far......adding some penetrating oil down the center doesn't hurt either...

Take the hot water hose off the machine and assuming you have really hot water let it slowly pour over the top of the agitator for awhile .Next rap lightly around the top of the agitator with a mallet then give it a good pull.I have used this method many times and it allways works.Repeat if necessary.
