hey gang!!

i am in contact with this guy, from craigslist, that had some washers & dryers posted on there. he sent me more pictures but i can't seem to save them on my computer. if anyone is interested in this vintage kenmore set (i am guessing from the early 80's) they look like a wheat or gold, you can email me and i can give you the seller's phone number.

this set is listed on the los angeles craigslist. if i would have to guess, i would say long beach, california, because of the area code in the phone number.

Very interesting pair

You know how we often find a washer / dryer pair that was purchased together, and when we figure out the dates of manufacture, we realize that they were made close together on the calendar, were sold and delivered together, and stayed together when being resold? I don't think things line-up quite that well in the case of this nice Kenmore set.

The dryer is a 1979 standard capacity model made the 23rd week of 1979. This machine is one of several models at that time which had identical versions in standard and large capacity. Most dryers like this one seem to be the large capacity version. This is a gas dryer, btw.

The washer on the other hand has a console from summer, 1981 production. There are cues that give this machine away as a 1980 model, but the hockey-stick level and temp knobs are the summer, 1981 giveaway clue. These were meant for the new 1981 models but were used first on some carry-over 1979 and 1980 models that were still in production a few weeks before the summer '81 conversion to the "energy efficient" belt-drive which had smaller tubs in the large cap models to save 3 or more gallons of water per fill. This is also when the consoles were finally revised in graphics appearance for the first time since 1976.

There were two versions of this 70-series washer model - one had two dispensers, and one didn't have any. Neither had an out of balance relay. The model with the dispensers sold for $20 more. They were both excellent sellers, probably the best sellers in the line. The next-up 70-series model had the DA, a Soak cycle, and an OOB relay. The relatively rare 1980 models are the 60 and 80 series. Oddly, just a couple years later an 80 series was one of the best sellers.

These machines might tell a cool story. I know that some people who bought one machine with this console were thrilled to go back to Sears years later and find a match still available. I'm betting this washer is at least two years newer than the dryer so it would be interesting to know the history of this set.

sorry if it seems like a mystery. the seller doesn't have a set price for them.
the guy didn't give me a price< this is what he told me in his emails:

"These are Kenmore washer and dryer from a older neighbor couple who passed away last year. Hardly used over the years and they had no children. I know not used much. The washer interior drum replaced about a year before they passed away.

If interested make an offer."

"May hold for my daughter and husband so we are not giving it away."

"They were used by my neighbors who passed away last year , no children, rarely used and was inside there house and now in my garage. I know the washer drum was replaced about 2 years ago and as far as I know working and good condition."

so what i gather from what he says is, make him an offer, but not so low as to insult him? maybe something to that effect??

he offered me a "finder's fee". but i told him that wasn't necessary & if anybody was interested in the set, i would give those interested, his phone number and that way, they can contact him and work out the details & price between themselves.

so if you kevin or phil are interested, let me know, and i'll give you the sellers phone number. maybe he didn't understand how this website is & didn't feel comfortable putting his number out there, not knowing who would see it? and i respected his feelings and offered to post and if anybody is interested, i'd give them his phone number.

sorry if the posting seemed wierd or mysterious, that was totally not my intentions. just respecting the seller's wishes. this was an older set the seller had for sale, that i had enquired about, found out it wasn't something i was interested in & thought maybe this would help someone find their dream set, if this kenmore set was something that someone was wanting to find/get.

While is sounds like they are generally in my area, I honestly have no interest at all.   I have WAAAY too many machines as it is!  LOL

 

FYI.... If the phone number area code is 562, that covers 13 different cities in an area over about 30 miles. 

 

And.... here is my usual offer: if anyone out there is interested, contact me directly and once you make the deal I can go pick them up and hold them briefly (no more than 2-3 weeks) until you can pick them up or arrange shipping.
