Kenmore BD transmissions--any gotchas?

Hey everybody,

First of all, thank you again for all your help and pointers with the BD Kenmore transmission I'm working on.

I think the bases are covered now. The last thing I'd like to pick all of your brains on is if there are any "gotchas" for reassembling the tranny for when it's done...you know, the:

- don't tighten this too much
- check to see if the thingy wiggles
- grease this with Crisco

...kind of thing. I can deal with how the pieces fit together and the basic cleanup and refill, but I may be amiss on the "grease this, tighten this only so much" aspects, because I haven't been able to nail down documentation on the tranny tear-down and reassembly.

And of course, being AR, I like to have it done correctly when I go to stick it back together :-D

One thing that comes to mind that is not directly related to the trans but when attaching the pump afterward, do not overtighten the pump bolts. I have stripped out the holes in the trans cover by overtightening them. The pump bolts screw into the aluminum top case of the trans and one can strip the threads quite easily. I usually snug them then give a little extra snug, if that makes sense. I'm sure there is a torque spec somewhere but don't know what it is. Just take care whan reinstalling the pump.

As related to the trans, be sure you reinstall the ball and disc in the correct order. The ball goes in first then the disc on top. The ball is about a 1/4 inch steel ball that resides under the drive shaft. Sometimes they can get lost in the gunk when disassembling and get lost. Make sure you have them.

Funnily enough, the ball and disc "plinked" out much to my surprise when I upended the bottom half of the case--so I caught them and noticed the tiny groove in the disc--I think I'm okay on that one.
