Kenmore Calypso set in Ebony

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

very cool set.

Our son has one in their rental house. He asked me how it could possibly clean the laundry. I told him it does it very well, not a gimmick. Just don't overload it.
It may break.
Have to give Whirlpool credit for innovative top load high efficiency designs even if they weren't the best for durability. Maytag also with that double wheel job they had. Inspired by amusement rides?

Beautiful

If they're in as good condition as they look and if they didn't wash painted, oily, sandy, muddy-etc.- items daily...these are perhaps one of the nicest sets I've seen on CL in a long time. I'd say $275 at the most, depending.

If you get these, Martin, we would love to see the three black sets lit up at night!

Nice W&D

This is not actually a calypso washer, by the time this washer was made there was so much negative publicity about calypso washers that this machine was labeled Kenmore Elite.

The good news by this time there were many improvements in the calypso style washers and this should be a great pair.

I have a spare panel from a different (presumably earlier) Kenmore model that says both Kenmore Elite and Calypso.  It has three features that the Whirlpool machines didn't:  Custom Program cycle button, Stain Treat function that runs an extended catalyst spray, and Delay Start.

yeah, there was so much dis-like to the Calypso wash motion namesake by this time....

that by this late time, Elite was used, and it was a Calypso Wash Motion, just not labeled as such.....

as if people were stupid enough to believe it was not, yet open the lid, and you knew.....

they just did a updated control panel so as not to refer back to the troublesome machine in the past...

definitely one of the best TL HE machines ever created......

I do like the Black and Stainless look......the older models under the Kenmore name were more of a Charcoal color.....as the Whirlpool version had Pewter...

Not to divert subject of thread...but...

Now that I see your panel, Glenn - yours has a Tap Water Cold/Cold and a Cold/Cold selection. What's the difference and to tie that into my question, is my Whirlpool Calypso similar in its selections? It's weird, but the panel has 2 ...Cold/Cold selections. What the !?

THANK YOU! So that's what "Assured Water Temperature" means? BUT...what about cold/cold vs. cold/cold?

Certainly, there's no refrigeration effect on water before filling, to make the water temperature colder than tap? What is the difference between those two cold selection? Is the AWT a kind of modified cold; i.e.; slightly warmer than tap? I'm curious because if so, I'd like to use it sometimes over tap cold water.

Thank you Mark and anyone else who might know.

under the parenthesis, water is temperature controlled.....hot water is added to bring the temp up....for these machines temps are brought up, not dubbed down as some newer ones do....

if I am correct this is only for the wash portion only.....as there are machines that regulate the rinse temp as well....

if Warm/Warm is selected....only the last rinse is Warm....again, I would have to check to see if that would be controlled....the 1st and 2nd rinses are tap cold

as for Cold/Cold at the bottom, or Hot/Cold at the top, its just what comes through the pipes, no controlling of temperatures for any part....

this is if I didn't confuse you more.....

Thanks

I better nip this in the bud. I can read the manual...I guess I'll have to assume there's really no difference in the ATC cold and the tap cold RINSES. But there is a difference in the ATC COLD water WASH. Pretty interesting stuff. And washing used to be so much easier, with a ringer. ? um. right? :-)

Now about this set you posted...? Anyone?

Yes, rinses are always tap-cold IFAIK (may check the service doc to confirm).

Hot/Cold is tap-hot for wash, which is what I always select and control the temp via my tankless water heater.  Note that Hot/Cold is selectable for ALL cycles, including Wool and Hand Wash.

Warm/Warm, Warm/Cold, and Cold/Cold in the "Assured Water Temp" section, the Wash temps are ATC-controlled.  Warm wash, as I recall, targets 105°F (or maybe 100°F) +/- some small variance.  I don't recall what's the target for Cold.  Warm rinse is either the final filled rinse, or it may be the final SPRAY (again will check the service doc if I remember to do so later, and whether it's ATC or a straight-mix).

Cold/Cold at the bottom is tap-cold for wash.

Kenmore fancied-up the labeling to clarify Tap Cold as such, and the Auto Temp Control light at the top presumably is lit for the middle 3 selections.

ETA:  Service manual says --
100°F ATC Warm wash (89.9°F to 109.9°F)
75°F ATC Warm rinse and Cold Wash (72°F to 80°F)
Cold rinse is always tap.

Warm rinse is a 25-sec spray starting 5 sec into the final spin (after the initial spin-spray/pause/fluff), although there may be differences on later control board revisions.[this post was last edited: 10/28/2017-07:15]
