Kenmore Elite Calypso Washer And Dryer - $90 (fontana)

I drove out to Fontana last night to look at this set.
They looked great in that beautiful dark gray color with the stainless trim on the control panel!
But I was disappointed when I opened the lid and saw it was a Catalyst washer, NOT a Calypso. It turns out the washer has the same control panel issue mine has. Occasionally it won't respond when you try to start it, or as it's running it will beep repeatedly as if some "ghost" is pressing the buttons repeatedly.
Anyway I talked him down on this price and brought them home. Wanted another TOL, fully auto gas dryer anyway.

Wow, Kevin - that's interesting. I wish sellers knew what the "H" they were selling. At least they knew they were ....washer and dryer. LOL! Glad you were able to get something out of the efforts and the dryer will fit into some scheme of collecting.

Kevin....unplug not only the machine, but the plugs on the boards as well, and leave it that way for several days....then try it.....sometimes they get a static charge and they do things on their own....after that, keep it unplugged when not in use.....
as for the Catalyst.....that control panel should have told you in a second that it was not a Calypso.....Calypso's have half moon cycle selections, versus this model having them lined up...

this would be their last generation of the Calypso lineup....although "Calypso Wash Motion" is removed from the upper right control panel....
Whirlpool used the same panels for all three series....KQO, KQ1, and KQ2

Yeah I had "Calypso" in my mind since that's what the ad read, but I didn't bother to look closely at the control panel until after I opened the lid.
Yes I learned to leave both the Catalyst and the Calypso unplugged when not in use. If I forget to unplug, each will occasionally "try" to start itself (as if that ghost was pressing the cycle buttons again).
I bypassed the lid switch on both, but that creates it's own problems on the Catalyst. About 90% of the time when I go to start it I have to put it into the service / test mode to make it forget the lid has not been "opened. I think I'll install a momentary switch on the back of the control panel so I can "open the lid".

My Calypso has not been disconnected from power (except perhaps in a few cases of a utility failure) since I put it into primary use approx November of 2008. It has not exhibited any flaky behavior. I do have it on an outlet cube-type surge suppressor.
a simple toggle switch is all you need Kevin......
I had mine plugged in thru a surge as well......but who knows, could have been from an electrical storm or something, but it just started to go crazy and come on by iself, but, since it was uplugged for a few days, and after each use, it has been working fine all these years....just one of those things....

That's a neat solution and weird about how it acted flaky after a storm. No big deal here with my comment, but it's interesting what happens with some units.
