Kenmore filter replacement

What is the best (easiest) way to replace this filter which is attached to the outer tub on my '74 Kenmore? It doesn't seem possible to unscrew the oblong shaped filter in it's current position near the corner of the cabinet. It is leaking from the bottom. Also, does anyone have an agitator cap that says "Pentaswirl" for sale?

The inner tub has to come out. Hope the agitator isn't rusted on. There is a large nut that secures the filter.

Depending on the construction, you MIGHT be able to disassemble it from the outside. I've seen parts lists where the filter is shown as 3 parts available separately as well as a unit. If yours is one that can be disassembled, you might be able to take it apart and simply re-seal it. Would save much work and expense if possible. Otherwise, Fixerman is right, agitator and inner tub must come out. Filter is secured on the inside of the outer tub.

This is a first, I've never seen any version of the Magic Clean filter leak, though I imagine it must happen.

In looking at the picture again I see that it IS the type that's held together with clips. Pry the clips off, remove the cover and replace the gasket or seal it up with silicone sealer.

Just hope it's the filter,and not a rust hole in the tub.

You may be able to remove the clips and fix the leak without removing it but it is in very tight quarters and is much easier to work on if it is removed first. If the agitator comes out easily the rest is not that bad to do. The big spanner nut securing the inner tub would be the biggest obstacle. If you don't have a spanner wrench, a punch or dull chisel and hammer can be used to remove it.

Thanks. As long as it IS leaking from the filter, I may first just try to reseal it while someone pulls the tub over so I can get my fingers in there. Sears only sells the whole filter, so I will improvise with sealer. Todd fixed my filter-flo's outer tub rust holes with gutter sealant!

If you are going to do that, you may want to try laying the machine on the front and work from the bottom. Try both ways to see which is easiest. Maybe Blue silicone would be best for this job. Make sure everything is completely dry before using it. I sometime use a heat gun or hair dryer to make sure everything is dry.
