Kenmore Straight-Vane Agitator

Hi guys,

I'm trying to find information and a part number for the Straight-Vane agitator (pics) posted on thread #7382 by
Compact9.

It's a "2-piece", gray agitator by (Whirlpool)Kenmore.

I want this agitator in this color but, the appliance sites only show the white, 1-piece style.

At the same time I can't provide a part number or model number, therefore , they are unable to help me.

Also, does anyone know if the (2-piece) style is made in white?

So, if anyone owns a washer with this particular style agitator, could you please give me the part number and the washer model number as well.

If you want gray,order it through GE.Whirlpool makes their 24"stacked unit which has that same agitator.Different brand name,different colored agatator.

Oddly enough I brought my old Whirlpool catalog to work today to do some parts research online. It has an agitator section, and lists the straight vane for direct drive machines in white or gray. The white one was part number 63377 and the gray was part number 63379. The book doesn't say if they're one or two piece agitators.

Checking at Sears, 63379 subs to 63377 now, meaning we can't still get them new in gray.

I have seen both one and two-piece straight vane agitators, and I'm not really sure why they'd make both (I know more about belt-drive machines), but I don't remember a gray two-piece. It seems to me that the gray one-piece units were in BOL models only, and the two piece white ones were in the lowest line super capacity machines.

I did recently see a gray straight vane at a used appliance store and graveyard. With the number of direct drive Kenmores out there, my bet would have it that if you search these places for a month or two, eventually you'll find a nice used gray agitator that you can recycle.

I will look next time I'm at that place and if it's still there, I'll snag it.

Thanks a million, you're my hero. It was meant for you to bring your old Whirlpool catalog to work so, you could come to my rescue.

I've been searching all over the internet trying to track this information down.

When Kenmore first introduced the Dual-Action PLUS agitator, they also made some 2.7 cu.ft. machines with straight-vane agitators.

These straight-vanes were slightly different in design. The barrel had the regular (8-vertical vanes) but, the base (4 flex-vanes) were the exact style of the Heavy Duty Super Surgilator agitator, 387838.

Maybe that's the reason why they made both styles. The one-piece for the Large and the two-piece for the Extra Large & Super capacity machines.

Which is the other reason I wanted the two-piece straight-vane. I then can interchange the agitator bases between the two for stronger water action at the bottom.

I want the gray straight-vane but, also the two-piece white one for that EXTRA agitation flexiblity.

So, if you come across BOL super capacity machines with the two-piece white ones PLEASE send me model numbers.

I'll be looking foward to the gray agitator.

Another idea for the two-piece units....check Craigslist Harry. I see the BOL super capacity machines on there almost daily, and they almost all had the two-piece straight vane.

I scour C/L looking for older Kenmores. I mean almost daily I see one of the lower line super tub machines - the one-speed deals with just a Heavy Duty cycle and a Perm press, and one knob for a water level selector (water temp is selected by the timer). That machine today has a dual action in it new, but for the last 10 or 15 years they've had the straight vane.

Check out Craigslist, sometimes the sellers even provide a model number. If I see one I'll let you know.

One last thought - Just last Thursday at HH Gregg I saw a Whirlpool model with their DD version of the Surgilator - it's not a straight vane but it doesn't have the augered spiral top, and I saw the straight vane in an Estate unit.

I'll start checking Craiglist for the older Kenmores. BTW, I've seen a video on YouTube of a 2003 Kenmore washer which is the exact machine you just described.

It had a white, straight-vane agitator and a super capacity basket.

That's the Surgilator with vertical vanes and wavy vanes (shaped-like a bent, spoon). I believe it's Whirlpool first direct drive Surgilator agitator.

And you're right, the 2.7 cu.ft. machine was a Sears Estate washer.

Interchanging agitators

Gordon,

I'm excited that it's possible to have a gray straight-vane agitator.

Then I started thinking whether or not the Sears Estate (2.7 cu.ft.) straight vane agitator is made in gray.

So, I checked underneath my agitator base and found part numbers for (gray) and (blue green).

My agitator is for the Super Capacity Plus machine which has 5 flex-vanes, 64214/64210.

I'll need a 4 flex-vane large capacity agitator, 387838 to interchange with a white straight-vane upper agitator that's two-piece.

Can you check your old Whirlpool catalog to see if it has the part number for the gray large capacity agitator?

Ultimately, my goal is to have the two piece straight-vane in gray and white so I can switch them around whenever I like.
