Hey Laundryboy!
That's the exact same washer model that I have! - but mine is in white.
I picked it up for $100 back in 1995 from a guy who came into my shop looking to sell it.
I used it for years in my apartment, the only thing I replaced was the agitator dogs once. It's been great since.
AND.... I even have the optional fabric softener dispenser that sits on top of the agitator!
I moved, got a house, and brought it with me to keep as a backup in case my Maytag A482 ever needs service.
I fired it up a few weeks ago, and that Kenmore still runs fine.
I wish they made a full height 24 inch Kenmore washer, or at least a compact washer with a rear control panel. That would be so cool.
Rear control version of this would be so nice. Only thing I would change is having a water fall fill flume.

They're sturdly little machines for sure.
Can't put a lot in them, but of course they're small portables.
That rapid agitation cracks me up though, and the two speed system is nice.
Mine sits, a bit dusty, across the laundry area from the Maytag.

Early direct-drive washers were 24" width, until the 27" standard arrived for larger capacity on the cusp of belt-drive discontinuation.

I wish they offered a full line of 24 inch and compact direct drives with precision parts.
Sturdy and powerful. Things get washed and spun out.
I had the pre VMW design washer design in the early 2000s. The one the solenoid actuated brake band and clutch. Found it behind a dumpster and took the hair pin out of the pump. One of the best washers I had. Cleaned, impossible to suds lock and it spun things out. It could handle a full size load, though the tub was of course deeper than the one in the video.
I'd still choose a direct drive version however. The direct drive system was amongst the best ever made.

I had this washer and matching portable dryer in white. Had lot's of fun with the two. Wish I would have kept them but ran out of room over time.
Was the purpose of the spray spin rinse for the outer tub? I hooked mine up to a faucet that had super water pressure and I assumed the slats in the tub at the top would fling water onto the clothes. On the first spin I would take the sink sprayer and spray onto the items to do a spray rinse.

That’s a really great fine and unusual color as well, we didn’t see very many of these compact full height dryers there was a small market for them, but the dryer was so small with only 3.4 ft.³ capacity that it wasn’t a great match to the bigger washers works well with this little washer, however.
I think the neat thing about it was actually put a drum light in it. It’s the only time I ever saw whirlpool put a drum light in the compact dryer design.
We have the little dryer like this with the whirlpool name on it that I converted to gas at the museum. It’s a fun little dryer.

My neighbor Thelma got a 24" set in the Toast color about 1985-1986. The dryer was electric. These replaced the late 1960s GE Versatronic set. By that time, their youngest daughter was a senior in high school, and the older two were married.
I would guess the spin spray was to get residual detergent and suds out of the outter tub, machine drain lines and pump. Spraying the clothes directly would have greatly improved rinsing performance however.
If Whirlpool engineered a water fall they could make an HE spin spray machine. With the rapid agitation, quick draining and fast spin speed thanks to the full size mechanism the machine could easily be designed with a very fast cycle.
This is how I imagine a rear control compact version of the Kenmore Portable. Forgive the font size on the Load Size, Fabric Color and Fabric Type selectors, it turned out much larger than I anticipated but still gives you an idea anyways.
Here is the timer and its timing sequence.
Fill 6 min
Agitate 10 minutes
Pause 30 seconds
Spin 2 minutes
Spray Rinse 1 minute
Spin 2 minutes
Spray Rinse 1 minute
Spin 4 minutes
26 1/2 minutes total cycle time. Very fast and convenient for small loads.
