I bought that same tub of laundry detergent a few weeks ago for use in the Kenmore Top Load washer in the garage.( for dog beds and blankets) It seems to do a decent job at cleaning but the smell is nasty. Kind of has a chemical scent to it. I much prefer Sears Ultra powder to this product. Aren't both detergents manufactured by Huish?

I have looked at that Kirkland stuff for a number of years, and it's a very basic detergent. Sodium carbonate, sodium silicate, surfactant, soil suspension agent, optical brightener, fragrance. No enzymes or fancy shmancy stuff. It is more or less the successor to "Clout", which used to be a fantastic detergent for top loaders, since it was loaded with STPP. But sometime in the 90's they yanked the phosphate and its performance plummeted. That degredation in cleaning was what got me going on a search for the missing magic "phosphate" ingredient that made such a difference (STPP).

So I haven't ever tried this Kirkland "institutional" stuff. I do have a 40 lb bucket from Smart and Final, that says it's low sudsing, and is also very basic. One of these days I'll give it a try in a front loader with/without STPP to see how it performs.

It's a top-loader detergent - it has nearly sudslocked every front-loader I've tried it in. I've topped with it a lot though ;-) Steve - gyrafoam has brought me a couple of buckets. I have softened water and usually supplement with STPP, ammonia or bleach depending on the load. It works well on towels too, but I had to add a touch of Downy in the rinse to avoid a little scratchyness.
