I think that's a 22-series Superba. I miss mine. Best dishwasher I've used in a long time, and so quiet that if air was coming out of the A/C register you couldn't hear it run.

Me too! It's my prized curbside find, likely tossed out during a mega$$ kitchen remodel. Black, like Gary's. It's a great machine, not as quiet as I'd like (more motor than interior noise), probably because it's installed at the end of a peninsula cabinet between the kitchen a nd breakfast room, so it's exposed on three sides.
Mine is and I think the others in this thread are actually post-Hobart models.

I have the black one too
That is why I posted it, great machine, I need to replace the valve on mine that keeps it from making gurgling noise from the air gap on the counter, but even with that it works perfectly every time. I like that it heats its own water allowing the water heater to be turned down to save $$$ too.
Hope someone can save it.

Make sure the air gap is clean and hoses to and from it are not kinked. These machines had reversing motors to drain the water out of the dishwasher. There is only a check valve to prvent the water from backing back into the machine when the pump is off.You can remove it also and it does screw apart into two pieces. Make sure there is not something keeping the valve open. When the pump is in the wash mode, it can cause a suction on the drain line and cause your gurgling sound too if the check valve is open or leaky.
One last item, make sure the drain hose rises above the level of the top of the tank to prvent any siphoning effect. You can clamp it to the top of the cabinet under the sink or sometimes, installers would loop it over the top to make sure it would be right. Hope that helps. The check valve should still be readily available thru any parts outlet. I have a few extras if you cant find one. Let me know if you need it

My KA is 1990 vintage, not a Superba but does have "Quiet Scrub" and "Automatic Water Heating" features. Is there a way to confirm the water heating is working? I think I read that it only heats during a particular segment of the entire cycle.
Mine has been making the gurgling/burping sound lately but it doesn't appear to be affecting the machine's operation. Is the check valve a big deal to replace? I may try it if it's not a job that requires pulling out the whole machine.
I'm very happy with my KA's performance and it's in great shape. It gets used once or maybe twice a week on average, handles the occassional BobLoad fine and shows no signs of failing me any time soon. I just house-sat for some people who have a Miele that's maybe 5 years old and it does an inferior job. It's also all rusted out on the tub side of the seal at the very bottom near the hinges, very unsightly. In contrast, the seal area on my KA that's over 3 times the Miele's age looks like new without a spot of rust.
My sister is going to dump her late 70's/early 80's Superba because it hasn't been well maintained over the years. A thorough de-scaling is probably all it needs to perform well, but she has already sprung for a new Bosch and is waiting for somebody to come and install it. rp2813, has your sister offered her KA up for grabs for anyone in the club, or at least Craigslist? It would be a shame to send a KA off to an untimely death without at least exploring other options.

Dave, I have advised my sister that there are very likely some interested parties in her area and that she should put it on CL for free with a picture. It's very likely that if she puts it out on the curb, it will disappear but who knows if it will end up in truly appreciative and knowledgeable hands that way. Anybody in metro LA (Eagle Rock) should be on the lookout for this machine on CL in the near future. I'll post a link here when I know it's up for grabs.
Meanwhile there is a 70's looking GE DW down the street from me on the curb, probably MOL at best, and it's been there for a couple of weeks. It's an old couple trying to unload it and it still works, but doubt they even own a computer to put it on CL. I can provide details for anyone in Sillycon Valley who might be interested.

The Miele is right where it's always been--in a fabulous $multi-million country home in one of the most expensive areas in the USA. I don't think its owners even notice or realize that the rust shouldn't be happening. Maybe this is a flaw in these machines' design. It's nearly silent when running but even the entire front panel looks aged and high mileage compared to my KA that's 3 times as old. Trust me, they could afford to replace it if they wanted to. When the Miele was new and they showed it off to me and I thought the top rack for silverware was a great feature. Now I see that much of the silver doesn't get clean and have changed my mind on that. It's also a pain to load the sliverware and I think the top rack holds less than the typical basket type of holder. I'll continue to take the extra time to make sure there's no "nesting" action in the front silverware basket on my KA because I think that's a tried & true system. I also found the other racks on the Miele hard to figure out for placement of the items to be washed and felt it would be nearly impossible to get a decent BobLoad going. I'm now convinced my KA is a far superior and better built machine in all aspects, even if it's not as quiet as the Miele.

First to answer the gurgling sound.. the check valve is easy to service.. it is clamped to the two drain hoses and all you have to do is remove it. But First turn off the circuit breaker as there can be live wires under th machine. get a catch pan for the water left in the tank and remove the valve. It does come apart and you can see if there is anything inside of it causing a bit of an open position causeing the gurgling sound. It could be a worn out flapper inside. It is more of an annoyance than anything to worry about. They should be available from any parts house and I think I have a few hanging around though they are not new.
Your second question regarding the heating.. what model do you have? That series of machines heated the water thru most phases of the cycles as the current draw of the element was used to activate the bimetal heaters for the detergent cup(s) and the rinse agent injector. You can always clamp an ampmeter on the line to the element and see when it is drawing current. Should be about 6-8 amps or so. Check the model number and let us know, then we can help you better

Steve, I'll check on the model number and get back here with another post.
I noticed the other night that on the rinse/hold cycle I heard no gurgling. It's not real annoying yet when it does gurgle, so as long as the machine is getting the dishes clean I'll not mess with it. Sounds easy enough to replace the valve when the time comes. Thanks for the info.

That valve looks like it would be fairly simple to replace. I haven't heard any gurgling from my machine lately. I'm now wondering if maybe I only hear it when there's a sudsing issue. I know, dishwashers aren't supposed to suds, but when you have a partner who likes to soak dishes in the sink with regular dishwashing soap, unless you rinse them very thoroughly the slightest bit of residue will create a huge amount of suds in the dishwasher. At that point I have to drain it and let it cycle through some washes until the suds are gone. It's easy to know when suds are an issue. The machine operates way quieter than normal. Except for the gurgling sound coming from the disposal.
