I have been concentrating on fixing up the kitchen for the last couple of months, and things are finally starting to come together.

One of the most fun, if hardest, things was the floor. The kitchen had a remarkably ugly press-on tile floor, as you can see in this picture

But underneath, was this floor! It took a lot of patient work with a heat gun, scrubbing with Oxi-Clean, and finishing with Future, but it looks great now. (This picture was taken after the tile removal, but before the buffing/future)

LOVE IT

LOVE the new vintage floor or should i say "refurbished/rejuvenated" wow, good for you, looks AWESOME

But what a difference ripping out a wall and installing a booth and a knick-knack shelf where a booth and a knick-knack shelf OUGHT to go makes! (the booth table is now fastened to the wall, unlike in the picture)

Finally, someone gave us this new coffee maker, but it really is a delight (no messy carafes, and it keeps the coffee nice and warm for hours, which is good - John goes to work at 5am, and I don't have to be at work until 9am).

Trouble is, it was too high for the cabinets. So we hacked out the bottom of one of the cabinets, and voila! Room for a wine rack AND a place to put the NuTone Kitchen Center (all the other counters are tile, and I didn't want to chop them up)

Other than painting (we're thinking seafoam-ish?), the kitchen is now pretty much complete...

Wow what a difference. Imagine thinking those tiles were nicer than the original floor. Great job on the booth as well. You're not going to re hang those Priscilla curtains are you, please say no. LOL

oh i just noticed Gladys standing on the booth seat cushion as well..

BTW how's the Nutone work?

the priscilla curtains, yes....

I have the same opinion of them as you do. They're not even nice curtains - just cheap Wal-Mart tat. As such, I was not part of the purchase. But rest assured that they are no longer part of the decorating scheme.

The Nutone works a lot better than I thought it would, actually. My only complaint is that the mixer head needs to be held down while the mixer is in operation, or it jumps out of gear (or whatever you call it) That may just be something dumb on my part, however.

Why they covered the floor is a mystery to me - I kept thinking, with each tile we pried off, I would find a place where the floor is ruined. But it was absolutely perfect. It was nasty, dirty, HOT work, but worth it - and like I said, kind of fun.

VERY NICE!!!! It's amazing how much better things look when one doesn't try to "force" a different style. What I mean is that the "new" floor that was intstalled on top of the original floor just didn't look right with the cabinets and other features in your kitchen. By removing the covering floor tile, and going back to the original surface, it now looks correct! That booth with the pass-thru is totally fun too!

Gets me thinking that I might hafta look for some "gems" like that buried around my house underneath layers of paint or coverings!

Great job Dan! Man I wish I had a floor like that! I do have one closet that still has linoleum and I love it!

Toggle, We'd be pleased to consider taking on your project, but when decorating, we insist on travelling first class, preferably by rail. If you can't arrange for a private railcar, we will accept a suite on Amtrak.

Oh, and a suite at the Waldorf with private car service out to Long Island please ;-)
