Kitchenaid Custom 21 Dishwasher - doesn't always start

Hi, after looking through previous threads it appears that I have a Kitchenaid Custom 21 Dishwasher - possibly the KDC-21A. Usually to start it, I push down the handle, turn the dial to normal, and then I push the normal button for the wash selection. Recently though, that doesn't start it. So I pull up on the handle, close it by pushing down on the handle, turn the dial a full rotation around back to normal and then push in the normal button for wash cycle. By the third time of doing this, it almost always started. Now I am up to 20 times of doing it until it starts. Once it starts, it cleans fine. Any ideas of what it making it not start? Thanks!

Not starting

Isnt there a safety switch inside the top right on the door? - it looks like a small cone depressing in a switch inside the door so that the machine wont run when opened.

Would pushing on the top right corner of the door after trying to start it help?
