We bought our house 15 years ago and it came with a Kitchenaid KDS-16 dishwasher. The previous owner helpfully left us the manual and noted that he had it installed in December 1970. I expected to have to replace it long before now, but it still works better than any of the newer models I've used.

Unfortunately, the motor has started to whine quite a bit, particularly when starting up the wash cycle. It sounds like a bearing problem to me. Is this repairable or will it require a new motor? Are replacement motors still available?

Thanks for any advice on this.

motors are out there

saw one on e bay just last month and last time i looked you could still get em from hobart since their commercial machine uses the same motor. this was about 3 years ago when i checked with them, maybe changed by now. check kitchenaid dishwasher parts on e bay.

i would def put a new seal in too, possible cause of bearing failure in your machine. if it's leaking water no use putting a new motor in till that's fixed. seals are also on e bay, saw one last week, and hobart has em.
