I have some...
I think one or two detergent dispensers.

There seems to be two models a KDS-17 and a KDS-17A.
Detergent Dispenser part #'s:
KDS-17: A-108979
KDS-17A: A-115153

Part Number changes thru the ages!
Robert, there were 2 different dispensers shown as you indicated, but I would say that the only difference between them would have been the slight indentation in the 115153 dispenser that allowed for additional soap to be added to the wash and it would have dropped into the tank when the door was cloised and added to the first fill segment of the cycle selected.
The 115153 was used all the way thru the 21 series whenever a dual closing door dispenser was specified for the model in question.
Now here is how the numbers have evolved:
108979 changed to 4160887 in the Whirlpool numbering system
115153 changed to 4161310.
They both susbtitute over to one and the same number: 9740171
which is also the same number used on the 23 series.
That would seem to mean that any dispsenser from the 17 thru the 23 series should work just fine.

if I were to use a dispenser from a KD-20, would it fit correctly on a KD-17A/57A?
According to the variants in part numbers as discussed above, yes.
But... the older blue dispenser on the has a wide, flat gasket while the newer white dispenser has a small, round seal.
Does this make a difference, or is this more just a matter of "actually this works"?

I don’t think a KD20 dispenser will fit on a kd17 series DW because the 17 series has a small recessed well in the door that it has to fit into and the flange on the newer dispenser is much larger, you could use 17 dispenser on newer KD 20 DWs etc however.

Too bad such a small difference means it’s incompatible.
I’ve been hesitant to rotate my dispenser upside down for fear to tearing the seal. And I haven’t been able to find an 17 dispensers, but plenty of newer ones.

It doesn’t matter if you slightly tear the seal just clean everything up and use a little RTV sealant on both sides of the old seal and screw it back in. Will be better than new.
