Hey all I just thought I would share a few pics of the dishwasher I am restoring back to health. Here is the beast...

The wash arm supports....notice the one on the right is new and the one on the left was the original support. Note that the spindle is very worn out.

note that the sides of the rack is rusted. I am on the hunt for "new" racks for her.

And the filter. This is all stainless steel since she has a heater in the sump area. Pardon the food particles on the filter base....

I replaced the wash arm and the arm support and now the dishwasher runs a bit more quiet that it was before the swap out. But it is by far not all that quiet. This machine can move water thats for sure. There is no middle arm and I told my friends mom that she should not pre rinse...the detergent needs something to eat and thats why her racks look the way they do. The lower rack wasnt that bad...a few bent tines but nothing major and I bent a few back to what they should be.
Notice the kitchen...it has not been touched since 1974. Gasp! Its well kept up with but when I go over it feels like I am stepping back thru time. Tackarama....

Great Machine

Oh No, these machines are not quiet by any means. But with proper racking, they'll take the rust off a trailer hitch. I have a KDS55 and a Regency (Both Portables) and Wow...Noisy, but they clean very well.

I think the KDS-17a is the best dishwasher KitchenAid ever made. We had a Custom model from the same year and it was one of the best we ever had. I remember it as being fairly quiet. The noisiest machine we ever had was a 1973 GE Potscrubber with the lousy pump/recirculator and the green plastisol on metal tub. That machine was a severe disappointment and convinced my parents to leave the all-GE club once and for all. Yoiks!

I have two 17 Superbas(one 17, one 17a) in the basement that I'm planning on cannibalizing into one machine one day. I'm going to need to ask you for help when I do.

Hey thanks for all the comments! For chris what kinda rack do you have?. Is it adjustable? Not that it matters at this point and they are NLA. I am very interested in what you might have there. I wonder how much it would cost to ship something like that to Massachusetts...

I have 2 racks here in Barnstable. The top one has a little rust but everything else is OK . I can remove the wash arm

You know that would work for a top rack. i should have saved the one I had in my KitchenAid KUDS 23 since it was nylon coated and there was no rust. I didnt even think about saving them when I was overcome with Miele Madness. i wonder if I could recoat the areas that are rusted with that rack repair stuff.
