Hello.

I have a couple of questions about this dishwasher.

It was in the house when we moved in , 9 years ago. It was old then. We thought it would be good to replace it, when we could afford a new one. We've since seen the crappy cleaning of "new" dishwashers, and have reconsidered.

So now, we intend to keep it alive as long as possible.

A couple questions:

1. The fine screen on top of pump assembly recently became punctured. Anyone have a suggestion to replace it? Is it possible to replace just the screen? Is it even necessary to replace it?

2. Anyone have a source for rollers and axles?

3. The racks need some minor repairs for nicks and minor rusting. Should one apply the rack repair kits to this (vinyl paint and plastic tips) or is there a better idea?

i love kitchenaids and have a lot of them but most of mine are much older than your model. i agree the machine you have will most probably do a much better job in less time and last longer than the new one's today!

i have never done any rack repair but i have heard some of the guys here talk about it on occasion. perhaps someone who has some experience in this area will speak up here. i do see racks for kitchenaids all the time on e bay, for old models and newer ones.

i have one kud machine similiar to yours with the same type filter screen but i have no extra parts at all. like said most of mine are from the 60's and 70's. some from the 50's. maybe someone will offer some advice here.

if "stevet" sees your thread perhaps he will give you some good advice. you could always look him up in the members catagory and see if he can be e mailed directly. most members put a personal e mail address in. he is the site's resident hobart expert as he works for hobart. i have e mailed him directly in the past myself.

since you have a newer model that pump screen might be available somewhere. i get a lot of stuff off the web on "parts select" and other appliance parts websites.

Wow - that screen looks like it is NLA from that site. You may need to check around on some other online appliance dealers or look on Ebay to get one. I'd check locally too.

You'll need the lower wash arm support which is NLA. However you might be able to find someone who still has one in stock. You can also check around the used appliance places and see if they have what you need. You might get lucky and find a machine that has been dropped off the back of a truck but has all the parts you need.

Rack repair

I just repaired the upper rack on my KDS-19. Took it apart, grinded the rust off with a dremel tool. Found two suitable repair paints. Uber-goop which can be found on ebay. Small bottle only 1/2 ounce. Dries extremely fast. Color is blue, comes close to matching Kitchenaid color. Not much coverage. Re-rack which can be purchased at Lowe's is the second. 1 ounce bottle, does not dry as fast. Easier to apply. Color is white. Both cost about the same.

Can't hide forever!

Since someone called me out on this one... Mike, you can run the dishwasher all you want with the broken screen, it just won't filter out the fine particles from the water that the disposer in the pump bottom grinds up.
You see, the disposer would grind up whatever got past the coarse strainer in the sump and would pump that debris into the soil chamber located under that torn screen. This would send clean water back into the tank to be used to wash the dishes. When the motor reversed to pump the water out, the small holes under the wash arm would flush the debris out of the chamber by sending water thru the top of the screen and the debris goes down the drain.
The water comes out of the small holes on the underside of the wash arm housing. Anyone who has a 21 thru 23 series unit should check these holes from time to time and make sure they are clean so that the flushing action can occur.

This is the same theory that just about every manufacturer has used since to achieve better filtration of the wash water.
But I would say that only the 21 and 22 series had the true disposer in the sump. No whirling springs or small cutters to do the work.

As far as getting a new support. I would try the outlets that the other guys have recommended and see if they still have any available as they seem reasonably priced. I know I have at least one brand new one but have to keep it as my only spare but I do have a used one that I once had on Ebay but it did not sell. Timing IS everything I guess. If you strike out on the new ones, let me know and we can make a deal.

What rollers do you need? The ones on the rack or the ones on the side of the tank?

DISHWASHERS WITH REAL DISPOSERS

The WP power clean system is superior to the KD 21&22 system in getting rid of food waste. I do service calls all the time to clean clogged filters on KD 21&22 machines thats why they changed to the better system with the 23 series. Granted the 21&22 pumps were sturdy and difficult to ruin but I do see metal objects caught in the drain impeller which jams the motor but usually doesn't require replacing any parts. I wish they had a KA 21-23 that had more than one final rinse I am not a nut about over rinsing things in general but my dishwasher loads are just to dirty for one rinse after the main detergent wash.

Mike, I bought a brand new KUDI21 when I remodeled my kitchen and it ran trouble-free until we sold our house a couple of years ago. KitchenAid dishwashers of this vintage are among the easiest to load of any make out there. If you are willing to go to the trouble of finding the parts for it, you won't regret it. The KUDI21 will process a load of dishes in about 1/3 the time it takes with a limp-wristed modern machine.

I meant to respond to this post a lot sooner so I apologize. I have a Hobart KDS-19 dishwasher that I will be parting out. It is in excellent condition but since I got the portable KDS-60 I no longer need it nor have the space. My plan is to strip it completely of all components and recycle the metal tub and frame.

Having said that I may have some parts that could benefit you. I have no idea if all of them are compatable with your machine but I'm sure some on here would know and be able to help.

Go ahead and shoot me an email with some photos or part numbers of some of the items you need. I'll see what I have here. I know the pump screen and stuff like that I do have.

I don't know if Mike is even reading this anymore, but plastisol repair can still be found in blue, although it's more blue than aqua. It's Maytag brand but not every dealer carries it.

Thanks again for all of the input. I have seen too many newer dishwashers that just don't do the job. One I can think of takes 90 minutes for a wash....It shouldn't take that long. I don't know much about appliances, but maybe it is similar to many manufactured goods - they "don't make them like they used to"
