I am looking at a Kitchenaid Artisan mixer for a friend.
It is model 5KSM150.
It is dead - no response at all.

I was hoping it was just motor brushes, but they look fine. They are odd - a triangular section brush in a square section brush holder, but I have found some info online that suggests this is normal. I have read a bit online about getting the brushes oriented correctly, which I don't quite follow, the diagram was a bit unclear.

What else should I be looking at?

I am very unfamiliar with these machines, I can do Kenwood Chefs with my eyes closed but I have never touched a Kitchenaid before.
I have taken the rear end cover off to inspect inside. The speed control lever moves the governor assembly in and out, and I can see the on/off contact opening and closing correctly. There is nothing black and crispy on the little circuit board with the triac. There appears to be another circuit board inside the casing, underneath the motor - how do I get in there?
Are there any common faults that would cause this?

Thanks.

Chris.

Get out your multimeter and check for continuity with the thing unplugged, and then if that doesn't explain what's wrong, VERY carefully for voltage with it plugged in.

Could be something as simple as a bad power cord or power switch.

Or it could be that the solid state speed governor has gone off its oats. That would be more complicated.

Thanks Sudsmaster.

Yes, it was the power cord.

I should have checked it first, but when I picked up the mixer I was told that the basics had been checked "by Laurie", whoever Laurie is, that there was power to inside the casing.
So I opened up the end cover, looked for contact points opening and closing; checked for obvious broken wires or exploded components (none); went online looking for a repair manual, asked here at automaticwasher.org; found an online manual, removed screws and planetary gear, separated motor housing, found nothing obvious wrong inside, scratched head, decided to start investigation from the beginning, so reassembled mixer apart from end cover; checked for power on governor - none! Tried to wriggle and flex power cord, and got intermittent action from motor. Fortunately the break is near the plug, so I can cut off a few inches of cord and fit a new plug.
Thanks, best wishes

Chris.
